DPS reports no charges will be filed against the pickup driver in the July 7 collision on the Fred Hartman Bridge that killed a mother Petra Patsy Banda Morales 46 and her two children. Demecio Banda 14 suffered non life threatening injuries. Ezekiel Cano was married to Morales for three years. See charges page.
Mont Belvieu City Council held two workshops to discuss the proposed 2012 2013 fiscal budget. Officials expect no tax hike despite creating a new personnel position. More details appear on page 10.
Voters approved a 2007 plan and 2009 funding to dry berth the 100 year old Battleship Texas at a $29 million cost. Projections now near $100 million with $71 million still unfunded, as leaks and hull decay worsen while other decommissioned ships seek homes.
Baytown Little Theatre opens Urinetown the summer musical led by an energetic ensemble. The show centers on a 20 year drought and a government ban on private toilets, forcing citizens to use public facilities run by a single profiteering firm. Cast includes Mica Box Ty Duke Travers LaVille Erik.
Lee College board of regents held a budget workshop for 2013 awaiting final state conformation and grant prospects. A drop in contact hours means reduced state funding, with initial projections near $650,000. A 3 percent cap proposed by four Texas community colleges could shrink losses but also lower gains for colleges with rising hours. If kept as is, Lee College faces about $300,000 less funding than last year.
United Way of Baytown Area welcomes Sarah Mikkelsen as an ExxonMobil loaned professional. She will work part time this fall, 20 hours weekly from mid August to mid November, to support the 2012 United Way campaign.
