Baytown Animal Services lists animals available for adoption in a brief notice. The police beat reports a burglary suspect caught in the act on page 3, signaling local crime coverage in the same issue.
United Way of Baytown launched its 2012-2013 fundraising drive with a complimentary breakfast at the Baytown Community Center. Kevin Troller, Baytown assistant city manager and campaign chair, urged support aiming for $3.1 million, noting last year surpassed $3 million. The event featured a local campaign video and remarks from Bay Area Rehabilitation Center’s Mark Alexander and Baytown Resource & Assistance Center’s Paulina Carrillo about program impact and creating opportunities.
Police identified Juan Pardo Gonzales, a security guard, as the victim in a Sunday murder at an alleged illegal gambling hall in the 7000 block of East Freeway off I-10. Three Hispanic men entered around 3 30 a m, played 8 lingers games for hours, and one tried to access the money area. Gonzales intervened and was killed.
Texas Workforce Commissioner Tom Pauken met with Baytown leaders including Mayor Stephen DonCarlos and BJ Simon to discuss education and training needs. DonCarlos praised Pauken for understanding local issues and noted Baytown faces more jobs than trained workers. Pauken highlighted a manufacturing based economy and past shifts from shop programs.
Police probed two Baytown armed robberies. at 1:45 p.m. seven young men robbed a man outside a Jones 7-11 on Garth Road, stealing about 400 dollars, while early Tuesday two men armed with pistols robbed a Valero on West Baker Street, forcing a clerk and a customer to the floor. Three suspects were identified but not charged.
Sherry Wallis AKC delegate for the Akita Club of America and Houston Kennel Club will discuss proposed federal rules aimed at puppy mills and a new licensing regime. The Baytown Kennel Club meeting starts at 7 p.m. Wednesday Aug 8 at the Baytown Fairgrounds.
