Bottle telegram feud over missing Terrell Tribune reward
Detroit architect Massengill and Texas publisher Van Leuven tangled in a 1950s bottle message scheme. A bottle found on Oxley Beach contained a telegram offering a $25 prize and a year’s Terrell Tribune subscription for a June 1950 Detroit River find. Van Leuven pressed for payment, Massengill denied involvement and later quit, noting he never placed or found any bottle.
