Bridge Reused Route From St. Francis River To Cedar Bayou

Engineers moved a large bridge from the St. Francis River to Cedar Bayou to save time and cost. The 60 by 220 foot center span rode on a major barge with two smaller barges carrying approach spans and towers. The float-out faced water level concerns, but the operation succeeded and the bridge traveled 30 miles to the Mississippi then through the Intracoastal Canal to Orange and Port Arthur before reaching Cedar Bayou. Built in 1912 for a 20 mile Arkansas to Missouri line, the bridge later served cotton, logs, soybeans and grain shipments dwindling, leading to its relocation and electrical modification at Baytown to automate lift, lowering for trains and full navigation clearance when unused.
