Rail Bridge Reaches Cedar Bayou for Baytown Steel Site

A one million pound lift span bridges Cedar Bayou to Baytown, after a 30 mile trek from Cody Arkansas. The barge passage required three attempts through the Tri Cities Beach Road draw bridge and a 60 foot wide barge with a 120 foot length. The bridge will form part of a Missouri Pacific spur to the 14,000 acre U S Steel plant, including an overpass on Highway 146.

Summer practice and choir tryouts at local high schools

Lee Brigadiers seniors are asked to meet at the Brig at 2 p.m. Monday for summer practice. Sterling High students may try out for ninth grade or boys and girls choirs with Mrs. Kina Stone this week. Budget shifts cut debt service tax to 37.5 cents

School Supt. George H. Gentry presented the 1967-68 tentative budget to the school board at a special meeting. He cited a debt service tax rate drop from 39.7 to 37.5 cents due to new bond interest estimates and deposits made July 18. The total tentative budget is 11,022,333, up from last year's 7,691,553.

Herbert Named To Handle School Insurance Matters

The school board approved Herbert V. Herbert as insurance consultant in charge of placing district building and property insurance for the coming year. He will be assisted by Pat Ball and Jim Bond with about 15 other eligible agencies in the mix. Commission shares are set with Herbert at 45 percent, Ball and Bond at 10 percent each, and 35 percent for other agencies. Renewal and policy reviews followed, with a public hearing planned for Aug. 7 after revisions to the policies manual. Four bids for equipment and services were accepted, naming Fruhauf Co. and others for band uniforms, musical instruments, and athletic concessions. The board also accepted two resignations and hired five teachers.
