Wabash Cannon Ball Makes Last Journey
Detroit to St Louis bound on its final run under Amtrak the Wabash Cannon Ball departed Detroit Union Depot at 7 15 am EST. Engineer J L Miller and lounge attendant Wardell Price recalled the train’s past glory as Sister Ann Joachim helped preserve the service after 1969 efforts to keep it running. The line’s decline reflects nationwide passenger losses and the Norfolk & Western merger with Wabash. The historic name, once linked to iconic routes across the Midwest, ends its long chapter in American railroading.

Washington AP report says high ranking South Vietnamese officials aided drug traffic that killed 40 U.S. GIs last year and spurred 22,000 sick calls. The subcommittee found no evidence implicating Viet Cong or North Vietnam in the heroin surge among U.S. troops. It cites opium and heroin flow from Laos, Thailand, and Hong Kong, and says 10 percent of Vietnam era soldiers may have used hard drugs.
