President Nixon cautioned that rising speculation on further easing of U.S. China relations could endanger progress. He spoke at a news conference saying travel and trade moves have occurred, but discussion of official recognition and UN seating for Beijing is premature. He noted a commission favoring a UN seat for Peking while preserving the Nationalist government on Formosa in the World Organization.
Austin AP report says the Parks and Wildlife Commission faces three developments. The Senate approved a resolution to sell 10 million dollars in bonds for park land, aimed at buying Mustang Island. Commission Chairman Pearce Johnson cautions that none of the funds would go to the island, amid a federal court dispute over 3,800 acres. Gov. Preston Smith seeks BOR approval for 3.2 million dollars in grants, with Johnson disputing application control.
In Municipal Court, a group interview led by Patrolman Willie Gore helps drivers with three tickets in 12 months. The session in Galveston and Houston areas aims to curb erratic speeds and risky exits. Gore uses a freeway diagram to show how to slow to 35 mph at ramps, noting ramps are 200 to 300 feet long and radar near a ramp is unlikely.
President Nixon defended his Vietnam strategy in a televised news conference. He warned protesters that those who break the law will be prosecuted while pursuing a gradual withdrawal. He noted ongoing talks with China and said he has not decided on recognizing Communist China and Taiwan. He ordered negotiators to prioritize prisoner releases and affirmed U.S. troops will stay in South Vietnam until prisoners are freed and a settlement is reached.
Lt. Gov. Ben Barnes will headline La Porte's Sylvan Beach Day to be held Saturday with a 10:40 a.m. parade and 2:30 p.m. Miss Sylvan Beach pageant. He arrives at 9 a.m. at the Civic Center, and the Pavilion hosts the pageant and a 8 p.m. dance with Ed Gerlach Orchestra. A Teen Street Dance at the Civic Center is run by Beta Sigma Phi.

Lee College Board of Regents approved the initial phase of a data processing plan to automate most campus records and support a regional computer assisted instruction program with area colleges. The project adds $20,000 yearly plus $2,350 transport and $5,800 installation, plus a $7,700 IBM systems engineering contract for software development set to start in July.
Washington judges weigh labor protections and service cuts as Amtrak takes over most passenger routes. Appeals loom after Pratt denies a temporary restraining order on the Georgia Railways case, with 20 railroads slated to switch and 178 trains to be abolished.
Clem Kovar receives the Optimist of the Year honor from the Optimist Club of Baytown during its Founders dinner celebrating the 18th anniversary. Reports say combined American and South Vietnamese forces found an enemy base camp about 25 miles from Saigon. The discovery follows ongoing combat operations as the war in Vietnam intensifies.
