Three Bridges To Cross Trinity Area Opens Soon

Local leaders and parsons from Baytown Anahuac Mont Belvieu Walleyville Cove and Liberty toured the Trinity Old and Lost rivers bridges as they near unofficial opening within about six weeks. Highway engineer D W Syphrett noted contractors still own the bridges and urged patience before full public use.

Baytown Music Study Club Scholarships Listed

The Baytown Music Study Club offers a scholarship to a Lee College student majoring in magic. Applications are available in the music departments at the college and Robert E. Lee High School with a May 10 deadline. Festival profit of 908.69 was raised at the Baytown Junior High spring festival Thursday night as patrons and donors are thanked. Proceeds aid the Goss-Inn and the ninth grade banquet sponsored by the Parents Council.

City May Enter Litigation To Get Drainage Easements

The City of Baytown may pursue litigation to obtain a 20 foot easement between East Texas and Wright Avenue for a 36 inch storm sewer to relieve flood conditions in Camublia Acres after residents urged action. City Attorney George Chandler and Mayor R H Pruitt reviewed steps as engineers drafted plans to route drainage south to Texas Avenue and east to Cedar Bayou, contingent on the easement.

Dense Fog Halts Ships Planes And Traffic In Beytown Area

Dense coastal fog in Beytown area slowed ship and air traffic and reduced highway speeds to a crawl. By 7 30 am visibility rose to about 144 city blocks as the fog lifted. Temperature rose to the 80s after a cool night, with scattered rain expected across West Texas over the weekend. Port Arthur Beaumont tied April 29 heat record at 92 degrees.

Eight year old loses eye after glass shatters through window

Ray Gene Hrazek of Dayton, eight, lost sight in one eye when glass fragments flew into his eye from a window broken by a playmate. He was rushed to San Jacinto hospital at 2:50 pm Friday, underwent eye removal surgery, and was resting comfortably Saturday morning. He was with other youngsters berry picking in a two story abandoned house when a ball rack struck a window, sending shards into his eye.

Salk Experts Discuss Shot Program Plan

A panel of 11 polio specialists led by Dr Jonas Salk reviewed the vaccination program with U S Public Health Service officials in Washington. They noted about 300000 children in five states and Hawaii had received Cutter Laboratories vaccine, with no conclusive link to 28 polio cases among the inoculated. Idaho reported seven new cases, but exposure prior to vaccination was possible. The government ordered Cutter vaccine withdrawn pending investigation as lab scientists defended testing methods.

Nine Bids On Baytown General Tire Rubber Plant

Nine bids were received by the Rubber Producing and Disposal commission for the Baytown General Tire and Rubber plant, after a bid reopening authorized by Congress. Bidders include American Response Chemical Co, American Research and Development Co, United Carbon Co, The Thiel Co, Minnesota Mint, Baytown Rubber and Chemical, Tennessee Gas, Food Machinery Co, General Tire and Rubber Co, Goodyear, and Ed Pauley of Los Angeles. Fire Destroys LP Yacht Basin Home

A five room home at La Porte Yacht Basin burned to ashes in a late night blaze. Watchman J M Huddileston was on duty when the fire started around 12 30 am. The cause remains undetermined. La Porte Volunteer Fire Department responded. The basin has suffered previous losses including a motor cruiser explosion and a docked boat destruction within the last year.

Popular car thief arrested after Highlands sighting

Franklin Smith, 44, of Highlands, admitted stealing a car after a Baytown tip led authorities to him in a Highlands restaurant. Deputies detained him and arranged transfer to Baytown police, with plans to hold him for Refurio on auto theft charges.

Go West Young Man One Way Street Start Sunday

Police Chief West Montgomery announced that by Sunday all preparations for making West DeFee a one way street will be complete. By Monday four traffic officers will patrol the street and temporary deny will be set at Commerce Ashbel Gaillard and Jones intersections to guide drivers. The change aims to reduce jams and will convert DeFee to westbound from Commerce to Pruett while nearby streets remain two way.
