Baytown police report a Saturday night burglary at 1236 Harbor Street, with a window broken by cement blocks and about $2 stolen from a cash drawer along with papers from a safe. Robbers used the window entry method.
Gary McGowan, senior at Robert E. Lee High School, will solo on baritone horn in the REL Symphonic Band spring concert on Thursday night at 7 30 in the REL auditorium. The six member ensemble under Charles Forque will perform a varied program ending at 3 45 PM for school youngsters, with no admission charge. The program features Arban Carnival of Venice and works by Claude Debussy, Gordon Jacob, and a Tijuana Brass medley including Taste of Honey and El Lobo. The McGowans include two other musical brothers and Gary plans to study band at North Texas State College.
The Bhis of the new Baytown City Hall and Community Center opens at 5 pm on Wednesday. The 29 acre Market Street site has already been acquired for the facilities.
The Baytown Human Relations Council plans adoption of by laws at a city hall meeting. The council aims to foster good relations, promote law adherence, and reduce discrimination through community communication and local problem solving. Officers, committees, and a monthly meeting schedule are defined with no dues.
Gene Robb, president of the American Newspaper Publishers Association, warned at the ANPA meeting that if unions press higher demands New York City could lose three newspapers, eliminating about 5,000 jobs. He spoke as the World Journal Tribune strike continued and criticized DOJ antitrust actions against joint publishing arrangements.
Doctors at Methodist Hospital Houston report Mareel De Rudder died at 2:05 am after a pulmonary rupture and lung congestion followed a dramatic six hour operation last Thursday. An autopsy confirmed the rupture as the cause, with Dr. Michel E. DeRakey present at death.
The sixth annual Baytown Youth Fair and Rodeo kicks off with a trail ride from Lavern's Cafe to Crosby, featuring a handmade saddle valued at 3350 awarded as a prize. Registration starts Tuesday at 1 p.m. with wagon-position drawings at 6 a.m. Wednesday.
Johnny Rudy Enriquez, 18, was jailed on murder charges in the shooting of highway patrolman Darvin K. Hogg and the earlier killings of Victoria Perez and Mrs. Phillip Foss after a farm house rejection. The suspect eluded a large South Texas manhunt, was captured near Cuero in women's clothes, and allegedly abducted two hostages during a violent spree that began near Robstown and stretched toward Stockdale.
About 3,000 tons of spare parts and military cargo have flown to South Vietnam under the Red Ball Express system. The program, launched by Secretary of Defense McNamara, designates priority space on nightly airlift from Travis Air Force Base for West Coast shipments. Gen Westmoreland’s urgent requests guide the cargo, and estimates show 16 to 15 percent of West Coast airlift is Red Ball.
Violent storms lashed Northeast Texas causing flooding with damage in the hundreds of thousands and at least 10 deaths. Tornadoes hit South Texas and Corpus Christi area with winds up to 75 mph and multiple twisters reported. County roads washed out, Red Cross housing needs, and rainfall totals in several cities noted as forecasters expect showers to ease tonight.
Canadian consul and trade commissioner in New Orleans P Alfred Savard will speak at the Baytown Kiwanis Club luncheon at the Tower on Thursday. Savard earned a BA from Loyola College in Montreal in 1932 and a civil law degree from McGill and Laval in Quebec. He has served in Latin America and various countries including Cuba and Japan since joining the Canadian government.
Saigon AP reports a U S supersonic jet fighter shot down a MiG21 over North Vietnam about 60 miles northeast of Hanoi. The downing marked the first MiG21 loss and the eighth Soviet built fighter claimed in the conflict. The pilot is believed to have ejected.
The annual preschool clinic, started Monday, will run through Thursday testing prospective first graders for mental and physical readiness. Tests include eye, ear, speech exams and readiness assessments at Memorial Baptist Church and various district schools. Deputy Supt. J M Stuart notes the program identifies pupils with potential problems and aims to prepare children for first grade.
