Saigon reports communist war planes kept distance from American jets after their first air challenge in 10 months failed. Ground fire shot down two U S Air Force planes, while a second pair were lost Saturday. Vietnamese forces claimed 243 Viet Cong killed and 20 weapons captured along a Mekong Delta canal, with light Vietnamese casualties overall.
Heavy rains halted the Dallas Open final round. Tournament supervisor Jack Tuthill delayed play to 1 p.m. and then postponed the final round to Tuesday.
Houston AP reports 65 year old DeRudder of Westville Illinois shows signs of recovery from a kidney malfunction and central nervous system reflexes after a six hour surgery that attached a mechanical pump to his heart for temporary bypass. Unconscious since the operation, his heart function circulation and reflexes improve per Methodist Hospital bulletin.
Baytown observes the 13th Chemical Progress Week April 25 30 with mayoral proclamation. Eldan Berry of the Baytown Chamber of Commerce cites the theme Chemistry Contributes and outlines company tours exhibits and outreach to science students among planned activities.
Attorney General Warrener Carr addressed the DULAC district meeting at the Holiday Inn Sunday. About 150 LULAC members and guests attended as Armando Martinez of Houston was elected district director elect and Frank Partida of Houston deputy district director. Houston was chosen as the 1967 district convention site with Council 1402 as hosts.
Maj. George H. Gentry Jr. of Baytown earned the Silver Star for heroism during Operation Harvest Moon in Vietnam on December 18 1965. He led his unit under heavy fire, directed artillery adjustments, and continued radioman duties after being wounded, inspiring his men. He also holds the Purple Heart and three Navy commendations and served in Korea. He will return to Quantico for Marine Corps Schools in June.
Mr and Mrs Ubnosky of 508 Denby returned from Grimes County where they attended the funeral of Mrs Rufus Smith. Services were held Thursday.
A dense cloud cover over Baytown and nearby areas reduced visibility and contributed to a two car fatal crash in Fort Bend County. The Associated Press reports at least 58 weekend deaths statewide from floods and weather related incidents.
Dr. Philip G. Hoffman, press agent of the University of Houston, will speak at the Lee College graduation ceremonies at 7 p.m. Friday, May 4, in the auditorium. About 35 graduates will receive diplomas. Hoffman, named UH president in 1961, previously held top posts at the college and is active in civic and historical organizations including the Houston Chamber of Commerce and the Grand Opera Association.
The Baytown Human Relations Council postponed the second annual fete scheduled Thursday night at the Tower. Rev Washington said D C cannot speak on April 23 due to urgent government matters and another date will be announced. Ticket holders will be notified.
