John M. Stuart deputy superintendent told Baytown Kiwanis Club that service is the main reason boys drop out. He said marriage is the most fre-quent reason, sharing research data during the luncheon at the Tower.
About 13 residents of Beach City at a town hall meeting indicated they would file for office in the upcoming town election. Chambers County Judge Oscar F. Nelson Jr. set May 6 as the filing deadline for Beach City and Mont Belvieu elections, with the voting date to be announced by Tuesday and likely on a Saturday. Absentee ballot considerations push the election to occur 20 days plus four after the filing deadline. Applications for filing will be available in Beach City and Mont Belvieu offices. No one has filed yet. possible mayor and five aldermen in each town, with marshal to be filled either by alderman or separately. Beach City appears to favor a marshal. Names read for marshal included Gus Dauzat and C. F. Gallway. Two mayoral candidates for Beach City named Ellie Jordan and Luther Mackrell. Alderman candidates announced include J. D. A May 5 Ladies Night banquet is announced at Goose Creek Country Club. Attendees at the meeting include Herbie Thomas, Ben Moskowitz, and Bruce Martin. The speaker criticized old practices and urged backing away from certain failed approaches, noting progress depends on change.

Seven high schools from Galena Park Pasadena Houston Texas City Galveston Brazosport and REL High School will compete in an Interscholastic League district literary meet Saturday at Robert E Lee High School. Events start at 9 a.m. with debate extemporaneous speaking persuasive speaking poetry interpretation prose spelling typing shorthand and slide rule. At 10 a.m. ready writing number sense and science follow. REL participants include Peter Morgan John Burns Morton McPhail Susan Perkins John Street Mary Ann Nichols Larry Hilman Sharon Chatham Jerry Gordon and Carol Lammers with several alternates and entries in journalism spelling and typing.
Gilbert Lumpkin and Dawton Hughes named top assistants to Ross Sterling High School head coach Roland Kudin. Lumpkin, Cedar Bayou Junior High longtime coach, will backfield and track. The car will be on display at the club soon and participants may contact Tournament Chairman Bill Beckman to enter catering or admission details.
Glen Arbor Creekwood Civic Association outlines four projects to improve safety and recreation. A street lighting program costing about 1220 dollars features 22 lamps with residents paying 60 dollars each. A temporary park at 1500 dollars is proposed along with a petition to set 20 mph speed limits on residential streets and a mosquito control plan led by health chair Rogers.
Senate and House subcommittees will hear Trinity River Texas backers on May 2 and May 4. Rep Jim Wright announced the House committee would consider the $912 million program with testifiers John Stemmons of Dallas and John Scott of Fort Worth. Congress authorized $83 million for year one but Johnsons budget offers $200,000 for an Army engineers navigation study.
Washington AP reports that missing tonight's deadline for filing an income tax return can trigger penalties and interest. An exemption may be granted if the taxpayer is ill, in an accident, or out of the country, but interest at 6 percent annually applies to any tax due starting at midnight.
