Johnnie Denena of Baytown was injured in a five car crash on Highway 73 near the San Jacinto River Bridge about 6 15 a m Thursday. Denena’s injuries did not appear serious and he was taken to Gulf Coast Hospital. No other injuries were reported.
An almost steady downpour began 1 a.m. Thursday and dumped over four inches on the Baytown area by noon causing flooding on streets and in homes in the McNair area. Gauges at The Saytown Sun station Essa ER&E and Highway 146 showed 3.1 to 4.03 inches with reports of more than four inches in nearby La Porte Seabrook and Kemah. About 1,500 Baytown Wooster phones were out of service due to lightning and rain, with crews restoring lines.
Cloudy conditions with scattered showers and wind gusts up to 20 mph. Temperatures 60 to 80 degrees with Wednesday’s high around 80. Rain totals 2.97 inches in the last 24 hours. Friday tides show low morning and evening values and higher afternoon levels.

Baytown volunteers will meet at the Holiday Inn Friday at 8 a.m. to plan final organization for the month long cancer crusade. Brochures and campaign instructions will be distributed. The April 9 house to house drive aims to inform citizens about cancer risks and early detection with Mrs. Rex Curtin directing and a team of volunteers assisting.
Rosie Ann Kilgore a Baytown pioneer and land donor for Roseland Park died in Houston at about age 88. She gave 25 acres for the park, lived in Baytown until 1924, and was active in Cedar Bayou Order of Eastern Star and Parker Memorial Methodist Church. Survivors include two daughters, a sister, a grandson, and numerous nieces and nephews. Funeral at Boulevard Cullen Chapel with burial in Cedar Bayou Masonic Cemetery.
The joint city school parks panel led by J. Robert Barnes and others outlines a pilot plan prioritizing city school joint use, traffic safety, and age diverse park use. It hopes to present detailed recommendations within a month to the city council and school board, with legal review by Bruce Ramsey and a Baytown delegation visiting Mesquite.
A water pipe cut by a pipeline contractor on Baker Road caused a rusty water problem in a large north Baytown segment. Thousands of gallons escaped before valves were shut. The break affected the Ross Sterling High School area and residential zones Glen Arbor and Morrell Park. City officials noted no complaints by Thursday morning and the water likely settled overnight.
The marble tournament scheduled for Saturday is postponed due to rain. It is tentatively rescheduled for Saturday, April 23, at the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post home on Decker Drive.

Baytown City Council approved two street projects Alabama Street and Oak Addition after public hearings. Alabama Street runs 0.5 miles from Durain Road to Missouri with a 37 foot width and cement stabilized shell paving. assessments are 32.83 per front foot on a door to door participation basis, the city covering storm sewers drainage and intersections. Oak Addition streets will be 37 feet wide with curb and gutter first, a 60 percent assessment on the street side and overall project costs of 293758 dollars for Oak and 89895 dollars for Alabama, with early price adjustments noted for stabilization and erosion control.
La Porte Volunteer Fire Department will host 43 visiting fire departments Saturday night. A dance will follow at Noble's Hall beginning about 9 p.m. and ending at 2 a.m. Sunday.
