SR and WWI Veterans BAYTOWN VETERANS of World War I and auxiliaries meet at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Civic Center to elect officers. Refreshments will be served. BSP Council BETA SIGMA PHI city council will meet at 6:45 p.m. Monday at the Community Building. Seminars will begin at 7:36 p.m.
The Baytown City Council approved GLEN HUDSON for the electrical board seat on the recommendation of Councilman Ted Kloesel. Bond sale bids for the first phase of the capital improvements program will be accepted until 6:30 p.m. Monday and opened at a special city council meeting in City Hall chamber.

Jer ry Turner director of the Port of Houston rejects the Nader task force claim that the Houston Ship Channel is the most poisoned waterway in the U S He notes only three small fires in 10 12 years and says the fire boat is sufficient while improvements continue He questions Naders sources and predicts greater firefighting authority for the district under a new state law The Nader report warned the channel could remain polluted for years due to silt and sludge despite discharges ceasing and cited the area as a major water hazard with most cargoes considered dangerous
The city council selected twenty four streets for the 1971 paving program with an estimated total cost near 260000 dollars. Streets listed include Stewart East Pearce Tennessee Oregon Brownwood Nolan East Jack Bayless Ash Dalley Amelia Redbud North Holly Holly Drive Caldwell Knowlton McPhail Wilson Tucker Granville Myers North Jones Olive and Cherry among others with varying project amounts.
Premier Chow En-lai told Radio Pakistan that China would support Pakistan against any Indian aggression. The broadcast followed Pakistan's denial that Indian forces crossed into East Pakistan, claiming the Indians were wiped out. Chou's message was sent to President Yahya Khan.

Baytown faces no immediate water shortage despite a long drought officials say. Floyd Adcox operations superintendent notes current supplies remain adequate though rain would help. He highlights the city’s ongoing drought conditions and contingency plans as a precaution.
Baytown Fire Chief Jim Bland Jr. warns of a very pressing grass fire problem amid a severe drought. He urges extreme caution burning trash and cleared lots, notes many burns are avoided by mowing, and advises a 25 foot strip around buildings. He also warns children with matches and campfires in weeded areas risk fires. Water use remains unrestricted for now unless rain arrives. Houston anxiously awaits rain as city reports water shortages amid drought.
South Florida skies have been veiled for weeks by smoke from thousands of Everglades brush fires. The drought from Lake Okeechobee to Key West is the worst in 20 years and water tables have fallen below sea level in the Big Cypress Swamp. Officials say water is pumped into Everglades National Park to support wildlife amid extreme drought and fire danger.
