Vietnam War Update From Khe Sanh and Mobilization Moves
Allied reporting described heavy fighting around Khe Sanh with 23 percent enemy bodies reported by troops and air strikes destroying a tank and armored vehicles. North Vietnamese numbers surged then dwindled, with estimates ranging from 7,000 to 30,000 as hills and Laos border areas saw continued bombardment. Casualties rose with 47 Americans killed or wounded as the siege at Khe Sanh shifted and forces moved toward new operations, while mobilization steps appeared to be unfolding in Saigon as Nguyen Van Thieu ordered measures and 185,000 more men were pledged by mid 1965. Westmoreland and Johnson discussed Saigon command succession during a weekend in Washington.
