Karen Black ships cookies to Vietnam while Miss Sue Jones leads Lee College Student Government as members attend the Texas Junior College Student Council Association Convention in San Antonio. Attendees include Alice Sawberger Phyllis Bayer Carrie Casey Cathy Sanders La Jan McAlister Sharon Griffin Ronnie De Hoyos Barry Reiter Don Midgeton Terry Gordon and Dennis Williams.
National Guard and Army units totaling 61 000 were sent to cities nationwide to quell post King riots. An extra 1 900 federal troops helped Baltimore, while Ohio sent 1 500 guardsmen to Cincinnati and Youngstown. Rioting eased but sniping rose, as 28 people were dead in five days and over 10 000 arrested.
Baytown area telephone customers transition to direct long distance dialing with few problems. Minor busy signals occur as users learn the 20 second connection period. General Telephone Baytown Division manager Al Chappell explains the silence after dialing is normal while the system connects out of town. Additional direct dialing capacity will be ready by May for summer demand.
Rain drenched the Baytown area with 2.1 inches in 24 hours as gages across Harris County showed wide totals. The National Weather Service cautioned of continued showers through Wednesday while reports from Beaumont and other Southeast Texas locales noted additional rainfall and minor flooding but no major closures.
The Baytown Driver License Station, run by Texas DPS staff, serves up to 200 people daily. Opened Jan 1 1968 on West Main, it tests drivers, issues licenses, and issues new two or four year licenses based on old license end numbers. New licenses resemble credit cards with photos and birthdates used. Minor drivers receive provisional licenses subject to revocation for two moving violations.
In Atlanta a horse drawn wagon bears the body of Dr. Martin Luther King through city streets as funeral rites proceed at Ebenezer Baptist Church. Vice President Hubert Humphrey attends along with dignitaries and 1,300 invited mourners. A 2 p.m public service follows at Morehouse College quad.
The SS Command announced the end of five Allied operations around Saigon with 3,335 Viet Cong and North Vietnamese killed. Senior U S officers say air power helped lift the 77 day siege of Khe Sanh and stopped a mass attack on the Marine base, though de escalation is not evident.
In Washington 11 000 troops guard against disturbances while a state of emergency remains in Wilmington Delaware after a night of sniping firebombing and looting. Baltimore sees reduced violence but sniping returns as federal troops stabilize the city. Rap Brown jailed in Richmond after court defeats. Boyston schools close and Fort Worth cathedral tolls 39 bells for Dr Martin Luther King. George Wallace targets Indiana in ensuing political moves.
Ted Kloesel will take seats at the Baytown City Council table at 6 30 p m Wednesday in city hall. The council canvass returns from last Tuesday's election and discuss speed limit changes on Highway 146. Incumbents Andy Braswell and Albert Fanestiel are re elected. An ordinance setting mobile home park standards and an animal ordinance hearing by Joseph Gradney are on the agenda.
BEACH CITY, Mrs. Eloiee Jordan was re elected mayor with 72 votes against 58 for C F Galloway. Incumbent Carl Slaughter did not run. Five aldermen were elected from six candidates: W D Bush 92 votes, R J McGaffey 84, A J Crawley 77, B H White 77, Jimmy McClellan 73, Walter Hoover 71. Nominees Nicholson and Harper did not seek reelection. Gus Dauzat unopposed city marshal with 127 votes.
Supt George H Gentry presents a preliminary 1968 69 budget based on a 1775 tax rate and a projected 317 million increase in property valuations The study shows a 345 million budget with most of the rise in capital outlay financed by a 377 million bond issue The board debates tax cuts maintenance needs and potential operating costs while awaiting tax equalization board decisions and a revised budget may be adopted in May
Baytown school board plans April 22 discussion to permit eighth grade teams to enter limited inter district athletics with Deer Park and Pasadena. Proposal, aimed at improving results, faces questions on cost and jersey colors while principals back it.
President Johnson hosted Ambassa dor Elsworth Bunker and other aides at Camp David for discussions on Vietnam peace talks. Bunker arrived from Saigon to join Dean Rusk and Clark M. Clifford for a breakfast conference as Hanoi sent a formal reply to initiate preliminary contacts. The talks, described as not a full peace parley, aimed to set a time and place for eventual formal discussions while Hanoi seeks a conditional bombing halt.
The Associated Press reports about major disturbances as roughly 10,000 federal troops, 1,400 Guardsmen in Cincinnati, and 14,000 federal troops in Washington bolster curfew enforcement. Rioting, looting, and shootings straining Baltimore Wilmington Youngstown Pittsburgh Chicago with police, guards, and troops patrolling overnight. A white college teacher was killed in Cincinnati. Three wounded in Youngstown including two officers.
