Dr. and Mrs. Cyril Bousfield longtime missionaries in China were celebrated by Woolwich Baptist church members and friends at Christine Hawthorne’s Woolwich Center home. The gathering recognized their 43rd wedding anniversary with gifts, cake, flowers, and a humorous poem about their China wedding cake fate. Notables Neal and Weston Bousfield, their sons, were named in the tribute.

Combat Engineers Meet for a Drill at Bath Armory
The second meeting of Co. A Volunteer Combat Engineers was held at Bath Armory with six new members, bringing the total to about 60. Meetings will be Mondays at 7:45 p.m. A camouflage lecture by Lieut. Carroll T. Berry was given, and Chester Roberts was named Acting First Sergeant while G. C. Auspland became Company Supply Sergeant. Plans include an informal Navy Day dance on Oct. 27 to raise funds for uniforms and tentative plans for a basketball team.

Mentor Host Reception Welcomes Freshmen Students
More than 375 attendees, including invited guests, attended the fourth annual Mentor staff reception for freshmen. The event featured a five piece Frank Curran orchestra and committees led by Ruth Cogan, Kathleen Harkins, Robert Kingsbury, Loring Hart, Marilyn Cummings, Betty Bowers, and Nathan Watson. Patronesses Hazel Feere and Virginia Jewett organized the affair, with freshmen wearing green bow ties to mark the occasion. A separate note reports a Bath Iron Works pipe shop worker returning home from Osteopathic Hospital after a five week stay following emergency surgery, now improving and able to sit up briefly daily.

A Sagadahoc Pomona meeting in Merrymeeting hall drew 140 attendees as the Diamond Jubilee year opened with songs, piano solos, and a Cross and Flag tableau. The Fifth Degree honored members from Bodwell, Dirigo, Dromore, Merrymeeting, Houston, West Bath, Topsham, and others. Fire department tackled two noon blazes nearby, including a small wharf fire and a brass foundry fire at Torrey Roller Bushing Works.

First Civilian Defense Unit Organized in Sagadahoc County
The Arrowsic civilian defense effort formed its council and executive committee with new members and a Red Cross first aid instructor among the aides. Miss Mildred E. Cribby highlighted a two week training at Farmington Normal school with 96 hours of classes plus lectures, practicing warden duties, gas defense and air raid precautions. The course involved gas chamber practice, field exercises, a 60 vehicle motor caravan with a smoke screen, and rapid medical and camp set ups.
