Naval Commander Hill Awarded Navy Cross for Heroism
Lieut. Com. Andrew J. Hill U S N and Mrs. Hill lived in Bath during naval service at the Bath Iron Works. He received the Navy Cross from Admiral Halsey for extraordinary heroism in Kula Gulf engagements near the British Solomon Islands July. His ship led a task force into danger, bombarded shore batteries, and rescued survivors while sinking or damaging several Japanese ships. The Bath Iron Works team and navy officers honored Hill at a Thanksgiving-era ceremony.

School board pressures shipyard camp families over crowded facilities
State Education Commission member Harry V. Gilson was told by Andrew Pettis of Local 50 CIO that shipyard workers living in a Cape Elizabeth trailer camp may quit their jobs if schooling for their children cannot be provided. Several hundred children in the camp cannot attend classes due to crowded conditions.
