Excessive Taxation Dampens Industry Says Study
The American Federation of Investors analyzed 150 large corporations with assets near 42 billion dollars and 6.49 million shareholders. They employed 3.171 million in 1937, paying common stockholders 1.45 per share and taxes of 2.62 per share outstanding, about double their owners’ receipts. The study argues taxes sap purchasing power, jobs, and future growth.

Indirect taxes cover most costs and affect the poor and middle class as heavily as the wealthy, as everyone purchases shoes, tickets, rent, groceries, and other necessities. It warns that the supposed tax free citizen suffers most from government excess.
