About 310 production workers at Bath Iron Works voted to authorize the Independent Brotherhood of Shipyard Workers to call a strike if conditions and law justify it. Of 352 ballots, 38 opposed. 4 were invalid. The decision follows a 30 day strike notice amid deadlocked contract talks targeting a June 1947 effective date and an 18 cent raise opposed by the company.
At the urging of Chairman Mrs. I. R. Miles the Salvation Army annual appeal begins and George Nute starts a systematic door to door fund drive in Dam ariscotta and nearby towns. Residents who have not mailed their contributions to treasurer Robert K. Tukey are urged to send in gifts to save time and expenses for the relief effort.
Mr and Mrs Carl G French and their son William depart Washington street for a new home in the Woodfords section of Portland. Mr French will teach English literature at Portland Junior College and William will enter the Emma class of Deering.
After months of negotiations William T. Delaney of Boston Realty buys land and five stores and several apartments on Center street Bath from the James C Ledyard heirs. The 102 by 135 foot site will be redeveloped into a modern business block with possible multiple stores. Redistributions include a right of way entry from Water street and a 25 foot strip of bank parking lot land.
Adjutant and Mrs. Clair T. Lowman arrive to lead Bath corps and will be welcomed at a Sunday service at 7 45 p m in the citadel 215 Water street Their prior command in Greenfield Massachusetts ran three years with strong corps activity and high division inspection marks The Lowmans are Indiana Pennsylvania natives with two daughters Virginia 7 and Evangeline 3.
Mrs. Ewell Coffee of Atlanta Georgia visits Bath and recalls 16 years of change. A Bath native, she taught in public schools before moving South to Emory University Hospital nurse. She farms cotton and holds several bales awaiting market prices.
The Maine Open golf tournament, sponsored by the Maine State Golf Association, will be held at Bath Country Club on September 5 and 6. Amateurs Maine residents and Maine pro golfers compete over 72 holes medal play with 36 holes each day. gross score determines the Maine Open champion.
Bath Rotarians heard Miss Esther Lipton discuss the State Department of Education’s new division for physically handicapped children. She urged earlier exams for children in need of educational services and noted cases where families were helped. Maine leads by example with a Pine Tree Society origin and a North Pond camp open for applicants. Continued on Page Two.
Warm Labor Day weekend prompts renewed interest in Maine’s early fall weather as tourists extend vacations into September and October. Boothbay and Bar Harbor see strong activity with Sebasco Lodge reporting its best season. travel remains heavy but overnight lodging scarce along Route 1 and in coastal towns.
A Bath telegram announces the Aug 31 birth of Stephanie to Mr. and Mrs. Stephen F. Leo in Berlin Germany. The Leos, former Brunswick residents, have many Bath friends. Mr Leo serves as Deputy Director of Military Government Health and Welfare in the American Zone of Berlin and previously assisted Governor Sewall in Augusta.
Sagadahock of Bath failed to place in the money at the 50th Annual Muster of the New England States Veteran Firemen’s League at Revere Beach Massachusetts on Labor Day. The Bath crew shared travel duties on a truck loaned by Bath Iron Works and competed amid strong headwinds with top honors going to Vixen of Berwick and Androscoggin of Topsham.
Sagadahoc County chapter of the National Foundation for Infantile Paralysis reports about 1800 spent this year for hospitalization and medical care for local polio patients. Four emergency aid units from Harvard Northwestern Stanford and D T Watson School of Physio Therapy assist in epidemic areas.
