Family escapes in night clothes as Bath fire destroys Holbrook home
At 4 a m a fire gutted the two story West Bath residence of Mr and Mrs Percy E Holbrook near Winneganee Creek. Six family members and guests fled in their night attire as the attic blaze from a defective chimney worsened. only a cedar chest and a few chairs survived. Engine Four arrived about 4 30 a m and the house was leveled by 5 05 a m. The Holbrooks and Thompson family had recently joined there. John Holbrook, Eva Thompson and others were residents. Neighbors assisted the women. the home, built over 30 years ago by Loring Williams, was a total loss.

Golden wedding anniversary celebrated at Bowdoin home
Mr and Mrs Walter S Douglass marked their golden anniversary on October 14 at Bowdoin home with 11 children 26 grandchildren and five great grandchildren present. The event featured a gold themed dining room cake by Hattie Wallace and roses from the youngest daughter. The couple born in 1861 in Auburn and Bowdoin celebrate with a large family including many in law and grandchildren.

Supper for 26 men was served at six by George Moody, Leon Eaton, and L. L. Hooker. A scout report led to forming a troop under Brotherhood, with a report due November 14.

A Bath bound passenger train struck the Wells sedan at Cook's Corner around 9:51 am Monday. Harry Wells of Pawtucket and his wife escaped with minor scratches. the car was tossed about 40 feet and damaged. Conductor Edmund L. Risteen and engineer Luce York supervised repairs. the Wells vehicle was driven away after fixes. This marks a second similar crossing incident this month following a Oct 4 collision near Bath.

Dromore Farm Bureau held its second annual fair in Dromore grange hall with a public supper by the Dromore grange women. Profits exceeded 65 dollars. entertainment featured Minott, a skit The Bee Shop, musical numbers, and talks on NRA relations. Exhibits included quilts, hooked rugs, needlework, and a harvest supper menu was served. Next bureau meeting set for Nov 10.

Night Fire Fails to Harm Bath Patrolman’s Home
Bath Fire Department responded to a shed fire at 372 Washington Street home of night patrolman and Mrs George W Wilson Saturday at 5 35 pm. Two pony chemicals used by Engine Four controlled the blaze with minimal damage and the all out followed ten minutes after the alarm. Origin undetermined.

In Sagadahoc, a jury awarded Josiah Reed and others of Woolwich 521 in a $2,000 case against Central Maine Power Co for damages to trees on their property. Attorneys were Ernest L. Goodspeed and Nathaniel W. Wilson. Albion Allen, 98, dug 14 bushels of potatoes in Hope and is noted as the oldest Grand Army man in the state.

Not Guilty Richards Case Ends As Jury Clears Defendent

Bath Iron Works Corp shifts to a four day workweek starting next Monday. The 32 hour total remains, with day shifts 7:30 to 11:30 and 12:30 to 4:30, night shifts 4:30 to 8:30 and 9:00 to 1:00. Friday to Sunday off, Thursday pay envelopes.

Bath Iron Works Corp has ordered about two million dollars of materials for the two 1500 ton destroyers Drayton and Lamson under the National Industrial Recovery Act. The $7 million contract for the ships includes steam turbines gearing boilers and electrical gear. Aiming to start work soon, the yard plans mold loft prep, slips, blocking and scaffolding with railroads set to handle the materials and about 800 workers projected within 12 months.
