Cosmopolitan Club Votes Donations To Worthy Causes
The Cosmopolitan Club met last Wednesday with a large turnout and voted to contribute 100 each to the Nurses Training School of Bath Memorial Hospital and to the Bath Youth Council from proceeds of last August’s Street Fair. Tulane to Honor Dr John C Geiger with Doctor of Science
Tulane University in New Orleans will confer the honorary Doctor of Science degree on Dr John C Geiger on October 14. Geiger, director of public health for San Francisco, is praised as an epidemiologist and health officer and receives the action amid his recognition by Peru with the El Sol del Peru decoration. Mrs Geiger will present the Geiger Medal to a Tulane graduate student for a problem in the Southern or Central and South American region.

Fire destroys Winnegance mill. rebuilt soon planned
An early Sunday fire destroyed the John G. Morse & Sons electrical saw mill in Winnegance district, Phippsburg, likely from a lightning strike. Bath fire crews, aided by Bath Iron Works, fought flames for hours. estimate placed losses at about $15,000 with reconstruction planned despite war-time equipment shortages. The mill, built in 1936 to replace a tidewater mill active since 1801, supplied timber and wedges to Bath Iron Works and New England Shipbuilding.

Bath Iron Works workers favored Plan Two by nearly two to one in a Monday referendum at the shipyard. Plan Two would create a yard wide incentive contract with equal pro rata sharing of savings on each ship, pending War Labor Board approval. Balloting ran from 6 am to 8 pm with 6,431 votes cast, 34 challenged, 90 defective, and 477 non ballots. Plan One was defeated. management will wait for final approval before adopting any changes.
