Millions will canvass neighborhoods in October to expand the National Congress of Parents and Teachers. The group aims for eleven million members, up from ten point six nine four million, reflecting growth in school populations and ongoing work for child welfare, health, safety, and education.
An editorial argues that federal grants to states have surged from 1.68 billion in 1947 to 4.27 billion recently and could rise further. It cites Wyoming and Missouri reliance levels, and a 1952 forecast that states may become hollow shells operating as field districts for federal departments. Mr and Mrs E S Toole of Scarsdale New York were Sunday overnight guests of Mr and Mrs James A Gillies Jr in North.
Miss Louisa Howard of George Town observed her 85th birthday on Saturday. A telegram dated Friday from Mamie D. Eisenhower extended warm congratulations and best wishes, noting approaching October 5 and wishing peace and happiness in the years ahead.
Bay Point chief coastal warden Owen Richardson and assistant Lief Anderson were visitors on Bay Point last week. Mrs Daisy Hinckley and daughter Ruth Kosalka called at the Navajo on Thursday. Mrs John Townsend left for Sarasota after two months here. Harry Stone of Lewiston and family stayed at Green Pastures. Ex Senator Neil S dinner guest at the Navajo. Louisa Howard Bay Point correspondent for Bath Independent celebrated her 85th birthday at home. Michael Conley and Emery Rideout spent weekends on Bay Point before returning to Massachusetts.
The meeting explored appointing forest service wardens among fire chiefs and a BIW history brief noted its ownership, size and fixed price contracts. Newell cited BIW payrolls and Maine economic influence while Turner and Mitchell welcomed chiefs to study Bath’s new station and learn ideas for their towns.

At Morse High School Band Booster meeting President H Kenneth Smith welcomed new members including Mr and Mrs Cerik Fullerton and Mrs Sanford Brown who joined the Ways and Means Committee. Director Cecil V Rowland noted three used instruments purchased for training and urged more donations to obtain instruments for local schools. Films from the Eastern Maine Music Festival were shown and refreshments served. next meeting set for November 4.
Funeral services for James W. Gillespie were held at 2 p m Saturday at Curtis Funeral Home with Rev. Harold L. Allen and Frederick P. Moffatt officiating. Honorary bearers included John Taylor, Earl Cahoon, Ralph Mank, and Zina Eaton. Active bearers were Edwin H Lowell, Karcher S. Jackson, James McGuiggan and Forrest Lewis. Burial followed in Growstown Cemetery Brunswick.
Edward L. Vigne was honored with morning services at Arthur F. Mayo & Son Funeral residence followed by a Libra service at St. Mary's church. Rev. John E. Bellefontaine officiated with bearers Edward Partridge Harold Corliss Henry Richards and Francis Bertrand. Burial at Calvary Cemetery.
A requiem high mass for Mrs Stella Comeau was held at 9 a m Monday at St Marys church with Rev Leo Thebeau of Trowbridge Massachusetts officiating. Bearers were Henry White John Bourque George Perry Desire Amirault Albert Douglas Jr and David Comeau.
Funeral services for Mrs Harriet E Jaqua were held at 2 p m on September 2 at Curtis Funeral Home with the Rev Craig H Richards officiating. Interment followed in Maple Grove cemetery. Ambrose Higgins of Bar Harbor and daughters Sally and Judithe spent the weekend with James A Gillies Jr to attend the Bowdoin Trinity football game in Brunswick.
Copenhagen Denmark visits Mr and Mrs James T Thorpe on High street. Miss Parkinson is en route to her former home in Denver Colorado.
Seph W. Larrabee and Edward J. McMann attended the afternoon program followed by a tour of Bath Iron Works. Chief Richard J. Frates hosted and received a rising vote of thanks from the association.
Emma M. Babine 62 wife of Eleazer J. Babine of West Bath died Saturday at her daughter's home. Born in Bath Aug 24 1895 she was daughter of John and Margaret Curran. Survived by husband six sons seven daughters three brothers four sisters and 34 grandchildren. Funeral at Arthur F Mayo & Son on Tuesday at 830 am with a 9 am Requiem Mass at St Marys church and burial in Calvary Cemetery.
Mrs Estella M Comeau widow of James A Comeau died Friday noon at Bath Memorial hospital after a long illness. Born in New Eddington Nova Scotia July 22 1880 she was daughter of James and Marguerite Doucette. Survived by five sons four daughters four brothers and four sisters. She lived in Bath 55 years and was active in St Marys church Sacred Heart Circle Daughters of Isabella Ladies Sodality and West Bath Grange.
James Wilson Gillespie, 90, died Thursday at Bath Memorial Hospital. Born February 8, 1867 in Goodspeed Landing East Haddam Connecticut, he was a machinist who worked for Brunswick Water Works as a youth and later joined Hyde Windlass Co. in Bath where he remained until retirement in 1953. He was a life member of Fort George Lodge R of P Brunswick. Surviving are his widow Mary Mountfort Gillespie a son John W Gillespie and several cousins.
Funeral services for Francis W. Deehan 57 were set for 9 a m Friday at St Charles Borromeo Brunswick. Deehan died suddenly at Foster's Point road home. He was born in Bath son of William R and Mary Hogan Deehan. He worked 23 years as Brunswick staff manager for Prudential Life Ins Co later in Augusta office. Active in Merrymeeting Sportsmen's Association and Brunswick Rotary, he helped Knights of Columbus Sagadahoc Council and was a Bath resident. Surviving are widow Gladys Whitmore Deehan West Bath son William C Deehan St Louis daughter Mrs Robert Farnham Biloxi sister Mrs Harold P Footer Bath brother Arthur H Deehan Bath two grandchildren. lot at Oak Grove.
John W. Cavanagh died Monday evening at his Calais home. He worked 30 years at Haley's Lumber Co. in Calais and recently retired. Survived by Myrtle Morrow Cavanagh, three daughters Altha Perkins Eleanor Hincks and Louie Arm strong, one son John G. Cavanagh, four grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. He was a member of the Calais Odd Fellows. Funeral services set for Thursday in Calais.
Averill N Vaughan aged 80 died Monday evening at Bath Memorial Hospital after a brief stay. Born in Hyde Park Vermont on June 23, 1877 he was the son of Stephen and Sarah Vaughan. He leaves a son Howard Vaughan Cumberland a daughter Mrs Royce Elwell Arrowsic a brother Elnathan Vaughan Yarmouth and six grandchildren.
Charles P. Shaw of River Edge New Jersey aged 68 died Thursday. Born in Bath he was the son of William and Jane Stinson Shaw and a Morse High School graduate who ran an insurance agency in New York City. Survived by wife son George an engineer in Brazil and brother Frank S. Shaw of Southport Connecticut.
Requiem high mass celebrated at 9 am Tuesday in St Marys church for Mrs Emma M Babine with the Rev John E Bellefontaine presiding. Bearers included Clifford White George Bourget Charles Babine George Babine Donald Brower and Robert White. Burial followed in the Calvary cemetery family lot.
