Bath Hero Remembered From Portland Wreck Storm
Bath resident W Gratto of Lambert Park recalls November 26 1898 when he saved a drowning man in Boston harbor during the Portland wreck storm. The wind tides and 80 foot waves tested old sailors as the Gov Ames yawl pitched and overturned. Gratto then guided a lifebuoy to the struggling man and risked his life along a narrow plank to reach him. The Portland sank with all hands. Gratto later retired as a Bath Iron Works inspector of machinery.
