Charles F Nelson, 56, of Bath, was fatally shot during a hunting trip near Lewiston in the county. The incident occurred around 10 o'clock as he and another man were walking through bushes and circling an area, according to police. Nelson, a Sparta veteran and former Buick Co. employee, had most recently worked at Bath Iron Works Corp.

Beets Wesley Day, 38, owner of the Wiscasset Hardware Co, was instantly killed Thursday afternoon when struck in the head by a stray bullet on Route 37 near Race's Filling Station. His wife and young son were in a Ford pickup. the wife stopped the car and restrained it. Day, a Auburn native and longtime resident, was a Mason and charter member of the Wiscasset Lodge. Services were Sunday at 2 PM at the Congregational church in Wiscasset with Masonic rites.

Bath Maine experiments at the Bath Boat Co led by Edward Gediman show a new infrared tank method to smoke and cure herring in 12 minutes, replacing days in traditional smokehouses. Filleted fish pass through the 20 foot long tank as hardwood smoke is blown in, then are canned and steam cooked for shipment. Projections include much longer tanks if proven successful. Summer fills cover most buildings, with the high school able to last until Christmas, burning about two tons daily, higher on severe days. An oil burner is to be installed at Huse Memorial School by midweek, and South Street School already uses oil heating.
