Lobster Rearing On Large Scale Not A Big Success
Clyde C. Taylor chief biologist of the Maine Sea and Shore Fisheries Department spoke to the Bath Lions at Boothbay Harbor Rearing and Experimental Station. He outlined Maine’s fishing industry growth and shifting centers from west to east, with lobster leading in value. He noted 50 percent mortality in lobsters two years ago from a blood bacteria called red tail and described lobster life stages and size at capture. Large scale Boothbay rearing since 1939 has not met hopes, costing about as much as the lobster’s value, prompting a shift to experiments. He questioned whether Maine-raised lobsters reach Maine traps due to the Gulf of Maine eddy. The talk also covered soft shell clam studies and Maine’s leading production.
