The South End Victory Club held a successful Thursday tea in the South End P T A hall. Tables with Fall bouquets, a program by club members featuring piano and dance acts, a raffle of a large cake won by Mrs Orris Ames, and proceeds exceeding ten dollars boosted the club treasury. Esther H. Gregory, superintendent of Bath Iron Works Corp hospital, hosted 16 nursing staff members at her home before dinner. Miss Beatrice M. Spiers of Portland and Miss Louise M. Brooks of Brunswick, newly commissioned officers in the Army Nurses Corps, were honored and each received a going away purse. The Bath Iron Works hospital has now sent seven nurses to service, one to the Navy Nurses Corps and six as Army Nurses Corps officers.
The Needlework Guild of America, dating to 1885, has three Maine branches Auburn Bath Castine with Bath since 1912 started by Mrs Harold P Small. A Wednesday tea at 3 o'clock follows the annual exhibition of warmunts donated for individuals institutions and emergency needs, at the Lewall home 963 Washington Street now Mrs Lowal Sewall.
The Rotary Anns held a Thursday meeting at Mrs. Carl C. Anderson’s Green Street home. President Mrs. Charles Doyle led a business session, members discussed future club work, and contributions were voted to local and state charities. Following Allied ground forces toward Germany, Havoc light bombers of the Ninth Air Force have moved to France. Aligned units of the command accompany these aircraft as the advance continues.
The Ninth Air Force Service Command under Lt. Col. Ray Fisher relocated from the United Kingdom into France, delivering maintenance and supplies for a two-engine combat group. Miss Polly Adams Ph M 3c stationed at the Air Station Port Angeles Washington leaves this week for her station after visiting her parents Mr and Mrs Carl Adams of Oliver Street. A Morse High graduate she previously worked at Torrey Roller Bushing Works before entering service. Polly has been warmly greeted by friends during leave at home.
The YMCA announces a season with 70 groups listed including three women’s groups led by Evelyn Keene and a new junior grammar school basketball league for grades 4-7. The weekly timetable features War Workers, nurses groups, Navy and Marine activities, and daily slots across several gyms with multiple age divisions and leagues.
The C A P liaison planes bound for Portland Squadron will not arrive until a week after Sunday November 5. Brunswick CAP cadets will take orientation flights once the Douglas Field Airport near Brunswick opens in first class condition.
Mr and Mrs J Haviland Torey of Middle Street have gone to Boston for a short visit.
Michael Lyden of Bath was arrested Friday at 11 am on a warrant for larceny of 500 dollars from Colby’s restaurant in Wiscasset. Police found 403 dollars on him and bound him over to the Lincoln County Superior Court with a 3000 dollar bond.
A Bath report details Key West storm damage with boarded houses and flood waters. A bungalow near the shore was surrounded by water, residents evacuated to a two story house. Streets were littered with debris including palm trees cement blocks shells and a bright red wheelbarrow. No telephones or electricity after the hurricane.
