The President calls every male citizen aged 21 who is not in military service to register at his usual residence on June 5 to be assigned to a war role. About ten million men will register, with roughly one in twenty chosen for duty, while others sustain essential industries. A strong emphasis on patriotism and national unity accompanies notes on naval progress, liberty loans, food pricing concerns, and Army expansion.

The Texas Steamship Co launches the Emma R harbor lighter and announces a banquet at Colonial Cafe attended by 25 guests. Miss Helen A. Drake of New York receives a pearl and diamond brooch from the company, presented by Supt. Thomas Spence. The Emma R measures 90 feet overall with a 17 foot beam and 5.2 feet depth, powered by a 75 HP Fairbanks Morse engine, designed for Port Arthur service. Both ships are slated to depart Port Arthur by month end and will launch without ceremony per company policy.
Scott Davis and Gladys Prince are recovering from measles. A few Ladies Aid members cleaned the church interior and forecast no services this summer. Eleanor Ambrose lies gravely ill after a hay mow fall. The Merry Club met at Miss Mabel Jordan's with a small turnout and pleasant refreshments. Mr and Mrs Harvey Jordan visited Mrs Jordan's mother in East Harpswell. A sighting of an airborne object near town sparked wonder after a Dramatic Club outing. The Trowbridge family from New York stayed briefly and will head to the Berkshires for summer. H T Rodick and Percy Pollard report a ten day fishing trip to Thoroughfare Camp, Rangeley Lakes. Captain Cleveland B Swett of the tug Pejepscot sold property at Cedar and Front to Texas Steamship Co.
Mrs Lucinda Umberhind widow of Gorham Umberhind died Monday May 21 after a brief illness. She leaves seven children: Miss Belle Umberhind Mrs Edward Wilson Mrs Walter Gates Mrs Theo Lang Mrs Ralph Cutler Frederick Umberhind and Merton Umberhind. Interment in Cathance Cemetery. Also noting the death of Charles E. Curtis on Thursday in Portland.

A delegation of Sasanoa Tribe past sachems attended a Monday evening Auburn meeting to organize a Past Sachems Association including districts 4 18 and 34. There are 60 members with Fred T. Hall of Lisbon Falls elected president and S O Foss Jr as secretary pro tem. The group will reconvene in Brunswick on June 1 to complete officers, with over 100 members expected. Portlands Siegars and Biddeford’s Miss Simensky will give a piano recital in the city on May 28. both are pupils of Miss Alice Rich.
