Huse School PTA reports a year of activities
At the final meeting of the year the Huse School PTA elected officers Mrs Paul Watts president Mrs Robert Pendleton first vice president Mrs Edward McCormick second vice president Miss Eleanor Danforth secretary and Mrs William Edgett treasurer The year’s program included fund drives dances suppers library talks and a children’s Christmas party It also notes several community events and a Lions Club talk by Hon William Franklin Sands on Asia and the Pacific war dynamics and Japan’s resources.

McMann Elected Playgrounds Head by Recreation Committee
Edward J. McMann was chosen as director and supervisor of the grounds for the current year by the newly elected recreation committee meeting last week. He said programs would start after school closes in June, funding dependent on city appropriations. The panel faces a challenge in securing assistants and instructors, with McMann compiling a list of available aides. Phillip Eaton chairs the committee. members include Mayor Walter C. Rogers Alderman Alden Anderson and councilmen Harold Carter Stanley Hunter H P Small and John O Witham.

Morse high school hosts sixth Bath physical education show
Nearly one thousand people pack Morse high school gym for Bath schools physical education demonstration under Duncan Farrell and Miss Anne Gipson. The event features fifth grade marching, 64 Morse girls in white with baton majorette Frances Downing, relay races among Dike Central Huse and Weeks pupils, and rugged indoor obstacle events for Morse boys. The 23 member Morse band under Violet Dyer provides numbers.

Principal Harmon T. Smith Named Field Scout Executive
Harmon T. Smith, principal of the John E. L. Huse Memorial School since 1942, is appointed acting Field Scout Executive of Pine Tree Council, Boy Scouts of America. He will report to Camp William Hinds in June, attend the National Training School in August, and lead Scout work in Bath, Brunswick, Mt. Mica and Yarmouth beginning September 15. His Bath home will continue, with local officials praising his two-year impact on education and community programs.

Fernald Addresses Legion in Bath on Maine Future
Roy L. Fernald of Winterport spoke to American Legion members and the Fernald for Governor club in Bath. He urged unified service for veterans and emphasized developing Maine resources and industries to provide jobs for returning World War II veterans. Fernald slated travels to Bangor and Rockland with a broader statewide speaking schedule next week, while Perry Thompson planned Monday’s meeting.

Former Bath Woman Collects Moths Across Regions
Miss Ruth Goodwin of Water Ville, a former Bath girl, has spent four years gathering moth varieties. Her colorful collection includes a giant Cecropia with a six and a half inch wingspan. She, born near the First Baptist church, studied at Bath schools, taught at Mt Desert High, and later collected cocoons from outside Maine. Her Sidney road home hosts visiting collectors, cocoons hatch earlier in warm temps, and she observes caterpillars to moths with care, using camphor to end moth lifecycles.

The Bath Country Club announces a strong membership drive for the 1944 05 season. About 200 applications have been received by Tuesday evening, with a half price initiation and reduced dues encouraging industrial firms and fraternal organizations to sponsor new members. Members of parent bodies can access the special rate once their organization contributes.

Two Barns Burn on Malcolm Place in Phippsburg
Two barns burned on the Malcolm property in Phippsburg igniting the Sum mer home of John C Malcolm of Wollaston Massachusetts and threatening the nearby barn and home of Lewis Leme Thy across the road. Bath Fire Department, aided by volunteers, fought the blaze starting from a barge barn and preventing further spread to the house and grass fires. The fire disrupted a pond water supply and the scene required rapid water from two streams to control the flames. (Continued on Page Four)
