Chief Henry B. Weaver reports year to date traffic fatalities in Maine exceed last year by five while April shows improvement. Officials call for harsher penalties for speeding DUI and reckless driving, stricter vehicle safety checks, and enforced parking rules to keep two lanes clear for emergencies.
The nation recalls last June commencements and graduations and notes a shift from finding jobs to finding workers. The Army Navy and Marine Corps offer inducements while industry seeks men and women to fill numerous positions in stores offices and other sectors as men enter service and vacancies appear.

Mr and Mrs Everett Bowie and daughter Shirley longtime Reading Massachusetts residents have moved to Rye New Hampshire where Mr Bowie started his own business He is a son of Mr and Mrs Fred A Bowie of Drummond Street
Miss Jeanette Dowling daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Harold Dowling and Edwin F. Oliver of Phippsburg were married by Rev. George Millard at the Wiscasset parsonage. They will live at Foster's Point for the summer. The bride is a Morse high school graduate employed by New England Tel and Tel. Co. and the groom, also a Morse graduate, works as a machinist at Bath Iron Works.
The council considers a Sea Scouts facility use at Dummer street school with repairs by the Lions club. Petitions on street lighting and Washington street extension are debated. Accounts totaling 2520.48 are approved. Officials discuss Memorial Day observances, Hospital Day at Togus, and National Flag Week. Multiple police and licensing actions are reported along with a 2000 gallon underground gasoline tank permit referral. Absentees listed.

Dr. William E. Kamber, Bath chiropodist, named commissioner of Bath softball by the Maine Softball Association. The plan calls for multiple local leagues open to men and girls, with a city champion advancing to regional and state tournaments. Teams may register 14 players plus 2 alternates by July 1. entry fee is one dollar per team. Applications due May 16.
Lieut. William Steen Blair of this city receives a promotion to Lieutenant Commander in the U S Navy Reserve special service branch. Navy officials at Bath Iron Works administer the oath, with Commander Joseph Kiernan supervising the ceremony at the plant. Blair, longtime Bath Iron Works port captain, has commanded ships from East and West coast ports and served worldwide aboard American built vessels.
Joseph S. Stickney Maine's director of wildlife research estimates that 30,000 large Canadian geese took flight May 7 from Merrymeeting Bay for their summer feeding grounds in Northern Canada after a month there. He reports flight groups ranged from 10 to 60 birds and notes it is unclear how the birds know when to depart for Canada.
Miss Vanona MacDonald spent the weekend with her brother Charles F. MacDonald Jr and Mrs MacDonald at 22 Oliver Street. She has been wintering in St Petersburg Florida and returned to Greene Maine two weeks ago to visit her sister Mrs Jane Brown.
Charles W. Moore comes back to Providence Bible School after a brief vacation with his parents at 47 Corliss Street. Guests Sunday included Rev. Howard W. Ferrin, school president, and Rev. F. Carlton Booth. He is set to graduate May 1.
Miss Margaret Mackinnon, supervisor of music, received two bouquets at the Spring Music Festival in the high school Friday night. Four school music groups were represented including Morse high band, Glee club, and orchestras from both high and grammar schools.
Robert Haley, an Iron Works employee, bowled 11 nines in succession at Park Bowling Alleys last week, breaking a 20 year old record. He hit ten nines in one game and another nine to surpass the anonymous prior holder whose feat stood for decades.
A story and a half home owned by Mr and Mrs Maurice Pashard and their son was burned early Saturday afternoon on the west side of the road between Center and Stonybrook roads. Bath fire chief Frates dispatched four men and a service truck at 12 50. Most contents were lost as the house burned. A report said the fire started near an oil burner.

Mrs Edward St Martin and Mrs Leonard Oliver led the Beacon Street Women's Division of Christian Service at Mrs St Martins home on Washington Street. Attendees included Mrs William J Craft Mrs Everett G Lemont Mrs Roger Pierce Mrs Della Adams Mrs Charles I Madden Jr Mrs Mattie Bachelder and Miss Webber. Tea was served and the group invited members to meet with Mrs Craft at 1185 Washington Street next Thursday.
