In Washington the expected congressional debate on convoying naval craft and supplies to Britain and other Allies dominates this week. Supporters argue supplies must reach their destinations while opponents fear US entry into the war. The outcome will shape whether the United States manufactures for Allies or risks involvement.
The National Cooperative Milk Producers Federation designates June as National Dairy Month. Efforts focus on boosting interest in milk and dairy products, stressing milk's key role for farm families and its health benefits for consumers.
Portland ends street car service on Saturday night and shifts all routes to buses. Lewiston Auburn to follow in weeks while Bath has used buses for years after trolley removal. Older generations recall trolley era replacing horse cars and now see buses as the successor.

Mrs. Elsie Pinson received an invitation to serve as guest Esther at Marion chapter Gardiner May 12. Annie Cox, Georgia, invited to Grand Representatives night at Iowa chapter Portland. The meeting featured the one act comedy Not Tonight. Refreshments were by Mrs. Smith and Mrs. John F. Bowie.
Rev Basil Malof exiled Baptist preacher from Russia will speak on revolution and religion in Russia at First Baptist church Bath on Thursday evening May 15 at 7 30. Admission is free and all are invited. Sponsoring group is First Baptist Brotherhood.
Mrs Roy F Shackford returns home from Memorial hospital on Turner court. Other notes recount visits and moves including Ensign Autre Strickland in Portland, James Jones returning after shoulder injury, Mrs Carroll Watson hosting friends for Mrs Graham Blandy of Greenwich, Rev Jesse Kenderdine and wife moving to Brewer, Philip Christy family visiting Sumner Christy, Harold Freeman returning from West Quincy, and Mrs Warren Pashard moving to Woolwich with daughter Mrs Ethel Dana.
A Bath Independent letter from Oakbrook, March 1941, describes Queen Charlotte's London maternity hospital under air raid stress. It notes nurse homes hit, free care for mothers, war-time fundraising needs, and appeals for group or family gifts to fund cots and patient care amid WWII.
The Maine State Hand Engine League will meet May 10 at 7 30 in Androscoggin hall Topsham for officer elections. Plans discuss attending masters statewide this Summer. After the meeting the season’s final dance, sponsored by the Veteran Firemen’s association, will follow. Dance committee includes Napoleon Gagne Jr James Tupper J Caron John Collins and ur Lavalle. Proceeds from the dance fund new equipment.
A Bath youth pleaded guilty in Municipal Court to assault and battery after striking another youth on a public street when the latter took his date. Judge Gardiner R. Deering placed him on six months probation and warned against using fists to settle arguments, advising calmer means.
At a city council meeting last Wednesday the $20 000 bond of City Treasurer Donald D Young was accepted. Mayor Walter C Rogers announced Roland Smith post A L members Edgar Leavitt, Howard Pratt, Kenneth Weeks, Edward Kelley and others as American Legion Police, later confirmed by the aldermen.
The Central church choir enjoyed a chicken salad supper Thursday night hosted by the League with help from the Men's club and the Ladies aid. About 35 members and invited guests were served. A rehearsal followed. League committees included Kitchen led by Mrs. Chester Soule and others: dining room chaired by Mrs. Edward Cummings and several members.
Mrs A Thompson Potter of High Street has returned from a weeklong visit in the area. She was away visiting relatives and reports a pleasant trip with family gatherings and local sightseeing noted during her absence.
A youth, residing with relatives at 4 Pratt Street, suffered serious burns to his right leg, thigh, hip and arm after gasoline overflow ignited on his trouser leg at Shea’s Filling Station on Lincoln Street. A customer’s car was fueled while he was off duty, and a cigarette sparked flames before bystanders aided him with blankets and a fire extinguisher. He was taken to hospital for treatment by Dr. Francis A. Winchenbach.
The Morse High School senior dance Friday night featured scarlet and white decorations and a special lighting effect. Committee members included William Marshall as chairman and John Coombs as class president, with Ernie George and his orchestra providing music.
David C. Dickson of Manchester announced as executive assistant to Bath Iron Works President William 8 Newell. A Yale graduate, he spent 15 years in midwestern insurance work and five years in Manchester. Married with two children, the family plans to move to Bath after the current school year.
The city council approves refunding of 100000 in bonds negotiated by the refunding commission. Mayor and City Treasurer to sign and deliver bonds. Sixteen thousand dollars to redeem and discharge June 1 1911 bonds from sinking fund. several council absentees noted.
A 12 inch gate on the east side of Middle street near Granite street burst Friday morning while in use. A geyser rose several feet with heavy pressure flooding the district. Water drained quickly and no property damages were reported. Gates were closed in four localities for about two hours during repairs.
The Bowdoinham United Baptist Association gathered at Topsham's United Baptist church for its annual meeting with Rev. J. Stuart as pastor. Officers elected included C. K. Daggett moderator Rev. C. J. Stuart clerk and treasurer and T. Albert Fields auditor. Speakers and delegates from Bath Freeport Brunswick and Woolwich outlined evangelism work and future meetings set for October at Five Islands and spring at Montsweag in Woolwich.
Rev. Arthur O. Rinden of Foochow China will speak at the Bath Pilgrim Fellowship Youth Rally on May 11 at the Winter Street church. About 20 youth groups from Bath and nearby cities will attend with an 6 p m informal supper and songs, followed by a 7 30 p m program led by George Rogers. Rinden, a missionary who endured Japanese bomb attacks, will share stories. Councillors Rev Joseph O Purdue and Rev Raymond G Putnam accompany the event.
Mutual Broadcasting System announced it has reached a proposal with the American Society of Composers Authors and Publishers to return 1 250 000 U S C A P controlled songs to the airways. Mutual sent terms to 175 members and affiliated stations, declaring an end to the radio music war appears imminent after four months of absence.
Charles R. Brown of Woolwich Union for Christian Service received a gift after a supper Thursday night hosted by Nequasset Ladies auxiliary. Young parishioners Marguerite Cromwell Evelyn Leeman Jeona Presley and Carolyn Thurlow offered the token as he prepares to preach his last sermon May 4. About 50 attended the meal featuring cold ham escalloped potatoes green salad pie and coffee.
Mrs Norman Chase the latest bride in the Club Garret was presented a blanket by club members at Thursday night’s gathering. The May 10 dance committee for Sedgwick lists Adele Hutchins Dorothy Anliker Jane Stevens and Shirley Tobey. The rifle team with Henrietta French in charge is starting practice. The improvement committee plans a new linoleum for the club room. After the meeting the glee club rehearsed with Margaret Mackinnon as pianist and director.
The Sanford and Springvale Fish and Game Protective Association, with 839 members, is the largest group of its kind in New England, though it is only about three years old. Members are fishermen hunters and good story tellers.
The yacht Aletes is scheduled to depart Bath Iron Works at 4 a.m. Friday for Boston to join Navy patrol duties. Built as one of five 190 foot yachts, it has sat idle about ten years after the contracting party died. Officials warn dock space in Boston could delay sailing, and a skeleton crew from Iron Works may man the vessel.
Mr and Mrs Ray Glascock and daughter Nadia left Bath for Bowling Green Kentucky where Mrs Glascock will stay while Mr Glascock, a Navy petty officer with over twenty years service including six in the Far East, completes a 2400 mile round trip accompanying them to their Kentucky home. Nadia active in Sunday school and the family attended First Baptist Church in Bath.
More than 100 Girl Scouts received invitations to visit the Blaine House and Gov Sumner Sewall in the State House on April 26. They signed a guest book and were promised a card bearing Helen Ellena Sewall's signature and the state seal.
Francis Leo Sullivan of Liberty Street appeared Friday before the Selective Service Board to volunteer for a year of military service. He is a Morse High School graduate and is pursuing a postgraduate course.
A son weighing eight pounds was born to Mr. and Mrs Harold J Sonia at their home 42 Edward street on Thursday night. Mr Sonia has served in Governor Sumner Sewall’s employ for ten years.
The Lionesses met Thursday night at the Sedgwick with president Mrs. Arthur M Bowker presiding. They set 6 30 as the supper time for future meetings and scheduled the next gathering on May 15 to review the constitution and by laws. The committee includes Mrs Leslie J Wold as chairman and several members. Standing committees were named Program Publicity Attendance with respective chairs.
The Cosmopolitan Garden Club reports a record May breakfast with about 150 attendees. Mrs Sumner Sewall wife of Governor Sewall attended with her children, traveling from Augusta. Roscoe P McFadden led dining room decorations and Mrs Chester A Roberts headed the kitchen committee. Mrs Edmund A Rothwell served as general chairman.
Capt Arthur O Berry of the Weeks street patrol accepted a plaque Thursday from Sept John Parker. The Bath Board of Education awarded it for patrol work praised by the Bath police. Weeks street won the honor the first time. Dike and South street had previous wins.
The Bath city clerk recorded births at Bath Memorial Hospital. A son George Thomas Jr. to George Thomas Costain and wife at 88 Russell Street on April 19. A daughter Jeanette Joseph to Marshall J. Boudreau and wife in West Bath on April 19. A daughter Judith Jeanine to Edgar P. Coffin and wife at 3 Nichols Street on April 18. A daughter Linda May to Francis B. Carrigan and wife at 142 West ern Avenue on April 17. A daughter Sarah Ann to Lawrence McNaughton and wife at 63 Oak Street on April 21. A son David Bailey to Harland F. Brown and wife at 124 Bedford Street on April 19. All births occurred at Bath Memorial Hospital.
Mr and Mrs Alden H Anderson welcomed a small group at their home on 83 South Street Saturday night prior to the Lions Ladies night event at the Sedgwick Hotel.
