Mitchell School students in grades 3 and 4 presented Friday morning programs under Miss Isabell Lewis and Miss Anne Thompson. Grade 3 focused on National Music Week and Mother’s Day with pieces including The Artist’s Mother by Selma Cummings and The Beginning of Folk Music. Grade 4 observed Conservation Week with poems, songs, and a series of flower themed pieces featuring students such as Barbara Murray, Audrey Tinney, and Dora Bridges.
An explosion and fire destroyed a 1937 Ford truck owned by Doyle's Express of Bath on the Bath Wiscasset highway near Montsweag. Driver Richard Gavett of South Portland emerged with only bruises after being hurled from the cab. The truck burned to the chassis and its day’s records and a bag of beans were lost. Frank Howe and Mrs Howe visited South Portland residents afterwards.
The American Legion Maine hosts the first departmental child welfare conference with the Legion Auxiliary The Forty and Eight and the Eight and Forty at the American Legion hall Saco on Sunday May 15 at 1030 am Speakers include Mrs Abraham Lord from Rhode Island and Dr C Eugene Fogg Portland along with Legion Auxiliary officers The program features educational talks on child welfare highway safety and state services with a discussion period open to all attendees.
The 1850-ton destroyer Samoson awaits a captain as executives and gunnery officers are named. Lieut. Erskine A. Seay becomes executive officer and Lieut. Kenton E. Price will be gunnery officer. Bath Iron Works hosts several chief petty officers and two warrant officers aboard.
The Morse High School popularity contest names the top pupils by class with seniors Harry Thayer and Doris Henderson leading, juniors Frank Curran and Patty Bryant out front, sophomores George Tinney and Frances Lemont, and freshmen Kenneth Vennett and Polly Nickerson.
For the first time in years the Fire Department units adopt regulations and by laws. Chief Morse endorses the regulations and the measures were presented to the Mayor and aldermen for approval. Pay increase petitions were denied to fund equipment improvements. Membership lists for Engine Co 2, Engine Co 3, Engine Co 4, Hook & Ladder No 1, and Hose Co 1 were submitted with elected officers and roles.
The Morse high girls opened with a 3-0 win at Elmhurst courts over Brunswick. Pat Sewall rallied to beat Miss Johnson after a 0-6 start, Ellen McCall swept Miss Nixon 6-2 6-1, and Sewall with Jean McCall won doubles 7-5 6-3.
Edwin Covel 68 of Bath and Lovell Covel Co. candy official, fell 20 feet into an elevator well at a Cambridge store on Massachusetts Ave. He was rescued by Cambridge fire department and taken to Cambridge City Hospital with spinal and internal injuries. His Newton home is on Chester Street.
The El Dorado Court of Awards held by Wild Rose Troop No 2 at Grace Church parish house drew over 100 spectators and added to the camp fund. Capt Mrs George L Nasi and Lieut Mrs Stanley T Hunter were honored with gifts for leadership. badges and numerous awards were presented to Brownies and Girl Scouts amid a program of pledges songs and performances.
The Morse high Senior class presents a three act comedy titled Little Miss Fortune on May 20. Director Amy Irsh leads a cast including Amy Irsh as Miss, with Mrs Cooper Betty Ryan and William Cooper among others. The production features a full committee and staff for advertising, program, and property coordination.
Morse high Dramatic club will present The Blue Bag a comedy set in a small town in late May under Miss Mary Conley and Miss Alice Hogan with Betty Ryan as head coach. Cast includes Elvira Livermore Sally Ryan George Reynolds David Teasdale Cindy Macklyn Pauline Nickerson Obadiah Macklyn Gordon Lake Anton McDonald Edward Butterfield Allen Ross Frank Curran Enid Lauton Leah Merrill Letty Long Frances Ginty Jim Keefer Harry Fullerton Barbara Walsh Bill Harrington Charles Moore.
The Yankee club of Division 4 Central Grammar met Friday afternoon. Doris Stickney resigned as gossip editor. Lena Given elected to replace. Norma Steussy read a ghost story and Ruth Cogan offered two humorous readings. New program chair Stanley Coleman with Shirley Miller and Richard Sullivan. refreshments committee includes Doris Houston and Millicent Coombs.
Four one act plays will be presented May 26 by the Sophomore class to raise money for a Washington trip when they are Seniors. The program includes A Bit O Heather and The Doctor among others, coached by Mr. Alkazin, with a large cast of students including Jeanie Bigger Martha Preble John Wilson Harold Avery Maggie Martin Georgia Kakos and many more.
A late Thursday fire destroyed a two mile by one mile pine woods in Dresden owned by H H Hunter of Boston and Samuel Holway of Portland. About 200 volunteers including Jefferson CCC members fought for hours, saving the Amelia Rittal home by trenching and felling trees. Firefighters planned to patrol overnight hoping to extinguish it before morning while fearing loss of 400000 feet of lumber owned by John Bailey of Wiscasset.

At the Club Garret meeting on Thursday evening Miss Carolyn Toothaker of Brunswick was made a member. Miss Vanona A. MacDonald and Miss Ruth S. Hodgdon read the Garret Gossip and a future Lit erary club was announced under Mrs Elwood S. Toothaker. A standing entertainment committee was appointed with Mrs John H. Grindell as chair and several members named.
Retired Baptist clergyman Rev Frank M Lamb conducts a Sunday worship service at City Home at 10 30 assisted by his daughter Mrs Jason A Merrill who plays the organ. Overseers and residents approve the service and invite the public to attend.
At the Arbor Day assembly in the Morse High School auditorium Miss Doris Armstrong spoke on Arcadia National Park Stanley Cressey on Conservation and Jack Sturtevant on Yellowstone National Park The program ended with songs led by John Madden with Carol Wood at the piano Frank Robinson of Biddeford plowed an automobile coupe to prepare ground for peas and reported good results except a rock caused a playful shout from his son
