In Phippsburg, a large oak in the Cutting pasture fell after centuries of wind damage and bark beetle impact. The column also critiques mail boxes, praising a homemade 18 by 6 by 8 inch model while describing flaws in height reach and door design. Various local boating, road, and personal updates follow, including Meadowbrook road impassability and residents’ weekend activities.
Richmond notes report the Ideal Home Corner club meeting at D of V hall with Belle Call Seth Watson Charles Watson and others on refreshments. Rev Lester R Norton preached on Jesus Prepares for the End and An Untroubled Mind at United Baptist church. Methodist services were canceled due to the Caribou conference. Others visit Augusta Rockland and Punta Gorda with farm sales and family travels.
Omar remains in Winnegance until the mill resumes operations. Mr and Mrs Errol Blaisdell and daughter Virginia visited friends in North Abington Massachusetts over the weekend. Miss Abbie Minott of Roxbury was a guest of Mrs Esther McCourt last week.
Harold S. Vanderbilt of New York City toured Bath Iron Works where his 110 foot pleasure yacht nears launch in about three weeks. He was joined by Capt. Fred Lawton and designer Roderick Stevens, creators of the Ranger. The new vessel, likely to be named Vara, follows the Ranger and Vara transfers.
WESTPORT N A Cromwell family returns to open their North End road home for summer after winter in State College Pa. Virginia Jewett arrives from University of prone to teach at Morse High School for the week. Boothbay Harbor visitors Mr and Mrs Vernon Brewer and son Richard stay with Mrs Higgins. Harvey Mosher of Boston visits family. L R Wood of Waterville stays at his cottage. New telephone at Thomas Booths home. Colin Dunn family and Mrs Hassel man visit. Lewiston visitors include Mrs Brian Jewett and daughter and others from Bath. J Louis Doyle and family arrive from Belmont Mass for a week at Nineacres. Shirley Apt and James Jr visit grandparents Fred and Mildred Greenleaf.
Mrs William Hill of Naugatuck Conn visits parents Mr and Mrs William W Abinson at 21 Old South Place. Harry Perkins returns home to East Boston after two weeks with Mr and Mrs Ray E Howe on Richardson Street. Miss Esta M Gediman returns to Allston Mass after a week with her parents at 41 Pratt Street. Mrs Reginald S Farnham of Brunswick Road leaves for Waterville for two or three days with her sister. Mr and Mrs Curtis Goodwin and daughter Kendra of Rockland hosted by Mrs Goodwins parents at 39 Weeks Street. Mr and Mrs Charles A Rush of Barre Mass arrive to visit Dr Charles F Rush and Mrs Rush at 243 Washington Street.
The Bath Iron Works driven region spurs demand for homes in Phippsburg and Iker Head where 17 residents work at Bath. Several houses sell with repairs possible, but bad roads hinder sales. Optimism grows for improved roads.
The Old Ladies' Home held its annual meeting with 17 residents. Secretary Miss Anna M. Trott reported three admissions since vacancies arose and steady adherence to established standards. Officers were re elected and board members renewed for three years as committees noted ongoing improvements, deaths, and generous community support.
Julia Ann Bates marked her sixth birthday with a gathering at 15 Marshall Avenue. She hosted friends and relatives including Wayne Perry Harvey Bates Marilyn Bates and grandparents Mrs Albertha M Williams and Mrs Dora Bates with Mr and Mrs Lloyd D Perry and Mr and Mrs Frank A Bates.
Friends of Irving Dobbin of the U S Coast Guard report he is ill with pneumonia at Bath Memorial hospital. The Hersilla sailed into Atkins Bay Saturday. Ethier, Moody, and Parker Head coast guard aid. Village visitors include Mr and Mrs Minott of Dover and Frank Scott. school opened and weeklong vacation noted. Sunday storm affected attendance. Several Coast Guard members and Bath residents are mentioned visiting cottages and returning from liberty at Boothbay Harbor.
Margaret Wyman returned to Popham Sunday with her parents Mr and Mrs Elkanah Wyman of Spruceville. Bath shoppers included Mr and Mrs Harry Spencer. Mrs Elisha Bridges and daughter Marion came home after visiting Mrs Bridges' mother age Wyman on Mechanic Street. Ernest Oliver of Bath visited his father Lyman Oliver. Lawrence Watts of the U S Coast Guard spent liberty in Fairfield with his wife. Aline Wallace came home after visiting her brother and sister in law Mr and Mrs William Wallace.
At the University of Maine alumni banquet Miss Virginia Jewett of Westport received the Amy B. Oaken award for Alpha Province East. The honor honors the most outstanding active Pi Beta Phi member in the province, with national competition possible for the diamond studded guard.
Mr and Mrs James W Lawrence of Fernwood Road West Hartford announce the engagement of their daughter Dorothy Alice Lawrence to Edward H Owen son of Henry W Owen Jr of Bath and the late Ruth Turner Owen. Dorothy Alice is a graduate of Edgewood Park Junior College Briarcliff Manor N Y Edward Owen is a Bowdoin College graduate class of 1938 member of Psi Upsilon and Phi Beta Kappa now with Travelers Insurance Hartford. Wedding planned for fall.
