Winter navy yard worker returns home amid family illness
Charles Varney, employed in the blacksmith department at the Kittery navy yard during the winter, came back to his city yesterday. His wife lies seriously ill with typhoid fever. Elmund French of High street near Marshall reports a valuable cow fatally injured after entanglement in barbed wire. The eight year old animal was highly valued by Mr. Smith. The tug William H H Clark arrived in Portland harbor Tuesday evening towing four 65 foot finback whales toward Boothbay. The process of sheeting whales from steamers becomes organized business. The bomb-loaded gun ends the whale life after entry. At Boothbay factories collect oil and prepare fertilizers, a profitable industry. Each whale nets about $400. The Boston merchant owner plans to capture over 100 whales this year, averaging two weekly. The Fanny Sprague has captured 26 whales this season, earning the last two on Tuesday. Alenza A. Morse, crossing a Maine Central wharf railroad track, tripped and dislocated his right shoulder with Dr. E. M. Fuller in attendance. The Alamedas defeated the Woburns 3 to 2 in a second meeting at Woburn, in 23 minutes and 3 and 4 seconds. Real estate transfers include Adams to Brown for Bath, Dike to Pratt, Maher to Welch, Mitchell to Perey. At Moulton’s wharf Perey Vo and Echo undergo machinery overhaul. William W. Mason to start handling mail between post office and cars tomorrow.
