U S spending on roads reached about one billion dollars last year. Traffic growth drives extensive construction with over 24 thousand miles planned and 217 thousand miles to be maintained by state highway departments in 1925. Federal aid roads average about 16 900 dollars per mile, while road material costs range from 17 500 to 44 700 dollars per mile.

Charles J. Engley, a Bath front street barber, celebrated his 55th anniversary in the business. He began May 1 1870 with E E B Philbrick, shaving Byron Cunningham as his first client. He has moved shops three times and remains Bath's oldest active barber.
Bath May hall hosted the Bath Veteran Firemen's Association annual dance with over 100 couples, led by Edward Miller and wife. Baxter orchestra provided music for a program of contra dances and reels. Vernon W. Miller chaired the committee with Melvin Savage as floor manager and Alfred Keene assisting. Frank J. Farrin and Herbert Anderson managed refreshments. George Worrey sold tickets and Edward Blake collected.
Dr. Erskine Gray of the Cunard liner Antonia handled medical calls from other ships during the voyage from New York to Plymouth. He treated a badly injured sailor via radio four times daily for five days on Tresworth and diagnosed pneumonia in the captain of the Antinous, prescribing three days of treatment that succeeded. Several other minor cases from distant ships were managed by radio care.
Referee William T. Tall notifies creditors of Bryant C. Wade of Damariscotta about a May 13 hearing in Bath at 2 p.m. on selling assets mainly boots and shoes valued at 800 dollars under Portland trustee William B. Perlin. Victor J. Ring of Richmond is scheduled for a June 4 meeting in Bath at 2 p.m. to prove claims and appoint a trustee.

Sagadahoc Grangers gathered April 29 at Richmond Corner with 165 members from Sagadahoc County. Speakers included state secretary El Te Libby who urged boosting Maine, pledged cards were signed, and a State of Maine song closed the day. A Ford touring car was stolen from a garage on High Street, and several small break-ins were reported, including Campbell’s on Lincoln Street and a shop on Prent and North streets. cigars and coins were among the losses.

Genesta chapter OL FB. S. held a Friday night meeting with four candidates initiated. A banquet followed with sandwiches and punch in the banquet hall. a social hour was not held. Large attendance noted. Annette Merrill named refreshment committee for the chapter’s 26th anniversary on May. Record lists several names for the committee and notes a hosiery production statistic: 1,015,749,084 pairs produced in the United States with an average of nine pairs per person annually, valued at 3,850,900,000 in 1024.
A lively parish event featured Bill Small leading a witty open forum, sharp quips about the League, and seven vaudeville acts. Lucy Kimball sparked laughter with a matrimony joke while the League orchestra and performers drew several exits and strong audience reaction.

They voted to ready the handtub for the muster season and set another meeting for Thursday night to plan further steps.
Mrs Edwin Haggett of West Path traveled to Brunswick on Wednesday to represent the First Baptist church at the Beadoinham Baptist association meeting.
The May ball event at the assembly hall drew 50 dancing couples and many who joined in auctions and whist. Anmr Trett won first in auction, Tina Sewall consolation. Mrs. William H. Small won whist, with Mrs. James E. Lockery as consolation. decorations were pink white green, Colonial club orchestra played. Favors by Emma Colby and Lewis Berry. Committee leaders included Charles Cummings Dorothy Hogue Hattie Brown and Howard Miller.
