Blue Jay Brownies of Troop 20 held a post Easter party and an investiture at the Hyde Park Community building. Eleven new members joined as Dororthy Marshall led the troop with Mrs Albert Rea assisting. New Brownie pins were awarded to Connie Arsenault Melma Mason Marcian Jackson Gail Longley Sandra Dubie Susan Dubie Joan Ware Paulette Taylor Cynthia Cloutier Patty Maguire and Sandra Jean Smith. Membership stars went to Shirley Anderson Diane Paulin Janice Jack.
Edward Little High of Auburn defeated Morse High School 24 to 6 in a Andy Valley League contest Tuesday afternoon. Morse suffers its fifth straight loss as Edward Little builds offense with strong pitching and timely hits.
Miss Ruth Sporl of Germany and S Sgt Linwood Miller of West Bath wed Friday at the Wesley Methodist church parsonage in West Bath. The Rev Dr Oliver W Bell officiated the double ring ceremony attended by the groom’s parents. The bride arrived in the U S Easter Sunday from Erfurt Germany. Miller, a Morse High School graduate, returns from 37 months’ service in Germany and will reside in Billerica Massachusetts while stationed at MIT Lincoln Laboratory Bedford Mass.
Lt. Jack Stevens of the Brunswick Naval Air Station addressed the Central Congregational Church Co-Workers Club, detailing Greenland and Newfoundland bases with slides and recounting three flights over the North Pole. A roast beef supper followed for 24 couples as the program opened.
The ceremony honored mothers and welcomed new members including Barbara Hairston Lois Cole Donna Baker Sharon Nickerson Peggy Ottley Patty Ames Betsy McInnes Alane Finley Claudia Nichols and guests Joanne Rea Karen Paulin Mrs Alvah Brooks and Mrs Robert McKenzie. A program of songs and folk dancing followed with afternoon refreshments and decorated tables featuring grass candy chickens and bunnies. Mrs Brooks photographed the new members.
Ralph Campbell Covel 76 of Bath died Sunday at his home 716 Middle Street. A prominent local politician he chaired Bath boards and the registration board and led the highway and sewer panel. He helped organize the Carlton bridge muster of 1928 and was first president of the Bath Veteran Firemen's Association. Born May 12 1881 in Bath he was a harness maker and later worked at Bath Iron Works during WWII. He leaves three sons a daughter four brothers two sisters and 20 grandchildren.
Funeral services for Thornton G Henderson 38 will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Beacon Street Methodist church in Bath. He died Monday at Maine Medical Center Portland after illness. He owned Kennebec Greenhouses with his brother and was a Bath Iron Works machinist. He served in World War II with an Army engineering amphibious unit and was a Bath Lodge Elk. Survived by his widow Mildred, daughter Rhoda, his father Charles, brothers Melvin and Frederick, sister Mrs Herbert Pierce and numerous relatives.
John B. Despres 75 who died Sunday at Bath Memorial Hospital after a month's stay will be buried at Calvary cemetery after a 9 a m funeral from St Marys Roman Catholic church. A retired pipefitter at Bath Iron Works Corp he had suffered ill health the past year and was born in New Brunswick July 2 1881, a son of Placid.
Mrs. Alice Winslow McLean 68 wife of Willard L. McLean died Friday at Memorial Hospital after living in Bath 20 years. Born Buxton May 28, 1889, she was daughter of Horace and Terese Hodsdon and formerly worked at Congress Sportswear. Funeral at Curtis Funeral Home Monday at 2 pm with Rev. Dr. Oliver W. Bell. burial Oak Grove. Survived by husband, a sister Mrs A Stanley Edes Portland, two brothers Elliot E Hodsdon Berwick and S Myron Hodsdon North Whitefield.
John T Dowling formerly of Bath died in Rome New York on April 24 He was born March 1 1894 in Bath to John and Sarah Dowling He is survived by his widow two sons John and George of Rome a daughter Mrs June Breadstill Orlando Florida two sisters Mrs Maud Lewis Portland and Miss Sadie Dowling Bath and a brother Harold Bath
Everett W. Leonard's funeral was held April 24 at 3 p.m. from Leslie C. Shumway Funeral Home at 638 High Street. The Rev J Lyal Calhoun and Rev Curtis Stanley officiated, with bearers Ulysses Grant Andrus Coleman Ernest Rouillard and Alfred Neal. A committal followed at Oak Grove family lot.
Funeral services for Alice Winslow McLean wife of Willard L McLean were held at 2 pm Monday at Curtis Funeral Home. The Rev Dr Oliver W Bell officiated with bearers Stanley Edes Richard Edes Walter Day and Walter Upham. Burial followed in Oak Grove.
Funeral services for Ralph C Covel will be conducted at 2 p m Wednesday at Curtis funeral home. He is survived by his widow Lucy McNeil Covel and a stepson Leon E Mason of Newark New Jersey.
