The American Legion backed program in Bath and Sagadahoc seeks systematic local mobilization for emergencies to ensure each division knows its role if called. The plan, endorsed by leaders in industry utilities and civic groups, mirrors efforts seen in other states and follows recent test successes in New Hampshire towns.
The Winter Street church Men's club held its final meeting of the season with 50 members present. Highlights included a Jan. 27 union meeting with nearly 200 men, a season average attendance of 48, and a guest appearance by Winter Street Church Basketball League champions. A program by Frank Lemont recounted old Maine games and included Bowdoin and Bowdoin vs Bates footage. Lin Wells praised athletic values, and Bowdoin game excerpts were shown. An invitation was extended for a Ladies' Auxiliary supper on April 5.
A surprise shower honored Miss Dorothy M Moore and Foster M Pratt at Elm Street Baptist church last week. Easter themed decor featured a central Easter egg gift table crafted by Lee Hooker. The program included songs, readings, solos, and games, with about 75 attendees.
Miss Ruth Skillings, city commander of the Women's Field Army for the Control of Cancer, announces Bath's second annual drive to fund and fight cancer. Gov Barrows designates the week beginning April 2 for a house to house canvass led by ward field captains and business district chief Mrs. James A. Gillies Jr. Members will seek subscriptions of at least one dollar, with contributions welcome in any amount. Maine ranked third among states in 1937, with 600 examined of which 500 were positive. 49 men and 164 women received free treatment.
The Division 4 Yankee club met Friday afternoon where Albert Nelson resigned as advertising manager and Lee Robbins assumed the role. Lieut. Jenni r AT Lord gave an engaging talk on the Frigate Constitution using pictures and relics. Miss Dorothy Martin visited her parents over the weekend.
Elks from Brunswick and Bath Lodge members attended a banquet and smoker at Hotel Phoenix last Wednesday with 37 in the party. The event featured steak and chicken dinners and a social hour with piano by Ernest Stanwood. Notable Brunswick attendees included Joseph Paquette Donald Hunt and others, while Bath Lodge was represented by many officers and members. Also present were Sam Levy of Rockland lodge and James P. Boudreau from Arlington Mass the guests.
Senator Sumner Sewall sends postcards from Kingston to Barranquilla Bogota and Cali describing orchids and river gold panworkers. From Rio de Janeiro he notes the Christ the Redeemer statue and expects to return home later this week after a coastal flight.
Central church men's club heard Prof. R J Lougee of Colby college recall his Russia trip with stereopticon slides and motion pictures of Southern Russia and Novaya Temlya island near the North Pole. A pot roast supper preceded the talk. Final club meeting of the season will be Thursday evening April 21.
Louise Briggs daughter of Mr and Mrs Edmund P Briggs of 722 High street was chosen head of Intra mural Sports at Mount Holyoke College South Hadley Massachusetts She received All Holyoke awards in basketball and speedball and has served as secretary and vice president of the Athletic association She is active in the junior choir and glee club.
Six week stretch of perfect attendance and punctuality earns praise for central grammar school pupils. The Study club of St Marys church held the first informal rehearsal for a minstrel show during its regular meeting Sunday with John Shaw directing. A tentative date of Friday April 22 was set, with final date and place to be announced shortly.
The Winter term record lists pupils with perfect attendance including Dorothy Thayer Betty Robson Richard Marr Katrina Moffett Dora Edwin Gediman Evie Given and Victor E Grace.
Rural mail carriers in Bath faced severe road trouble amid warm spell and light snow. Everett Stevens on Georgetown route to Five Islands spent six hours from Bath. Bates Stover to Popham Beach towed by Coast Guard. Thomas Allegrin on Small Point Sebasco West Point endured a tire ruin. William Ketchum walked miles. Meanwhile a Ramona council event featured Great Chiefs and guests from Portland Orrs Island and Brunswick with Libby presented a lace tablecloth. The gathering noted the upcoming Great Council session in Bath for the S. O. R. M.’s 50th anniversary.
The survey for electric distribution to cottage and permanent residents at Popham Beach is complete. Delays arise awaiting state permission to stretch from Bay Point to state land near the old granite fort. Central Maine Power Co pledges $1,500 yearly for five years, and construction may finish before the season starts. Rights of way vary by locality but no major obstacles expected. Construction starts at Kennebec Point and Bay Point roads in Georgetown, runs 1.7 miles to Bay Point wharf, crosses Kennebec River, then 15 miles of distribution wire at Popham.
Rev. Ernest Heywood of Wesley church spoke at the WCTU monthly social at Mrs. Mabel Paquet’s home on Russell street. The devotional was by Mrs. Nella Stover, with roll call on liquor problems. A short business session read notices from county wildlife federation, cancer society, and Loyal Temperance Legion officers. An invitation was accepted to meet at Mrs. Laura Harrington’s home on 209 North street, April 12.
Commissioner Arthur R Greenleaf of the Sea and Shore Fisheries department announced the reappointment of Owen A Richardson of Phippsburg as warden. Greenleaf recently reappointed twenty wardens from the former Feyler administration as part of his new tenure succeeding Feyler.
The Brunswick Community Concert Association moves its April performance to April 13 at 8 15 p.m. in Memorial Hall Bowdoin College Brunswick. Pianist Erno Balogh will play as part of the winter series, open only to association members with tickets issued after the last fall campaign.
Edgar E. McNeil pled guilty to larceny of a pocket book from W. T. Grant Co Center Street. He was sentenced by Recorder Gardiner R. Deering in Bath municipal court to four months in Kennebec county jail. On an intoxication charge he pled guilty and received an additional two months.
In a letter to Morse High principal Horace P Herrick P F Crane director of admission at the University of Maine announces Morse High placed third in the Freshman School Cup. Edward Little Auburn claimed first Deering Portland second. Morse freshmen earned eight A s and 16 B s with no failures listing seven named students.
The Winter Street Ladies' Aid met for an all day session at the church with 52 in attendance. A luncheon was served by the March committee led by Mrs. Arthur C. Lemont. Rev. Joseph O. Purdue gave Lennan talks in the afternoon on being willing to be yourself and gaining courage to endure. Mrs. Sturtevant sang two solos and Mrs. Carl Albee accompanied on piano. Next Friday's last session of the season will feature a silver tea with guests, and a rummage sale is set for April 20.

Ex Governor Louis J. Brann addressed the Democratic caucus in City hall auditorium, praised party unity, predicted a Democratic Legislature, and urged delegates for the April 9 Augusta conventions. Chairman Ralph Covel led the gathering as 21 delegates and alternates were named, listing Archibald Main, John Carey, L Eugene Thebeau, and others.

Lieut. Arthur E. Loesser U S N urged proper posture at Morse high school addressing a junior high assembly. He stressed strong muscles and spinal curves as keys to balance and erect carriage, noting habits of bad posture over time can be corrected while young.
Pine Tree circle of C. O. F. of A. elected officers Friday night to be installed in Red Men's hall on April 8. Officers include Mary E. Gallant chaplain, Anna M. Conley chief companion, Annie M. Wilson sub-chief companion, Mary F. Murphy financial secretary, Nellie M. Johnson treasurer, Ella Dingley recording secretary, Alice Burgess past chief companion, Ma bel M. Ansert trustee chair, Mary E. Carey and Jennie Farrin associate members, among others.
During the business session of Lowell temple P S last Wednesday evening Mrs Charles Dunning received a 25 year service pin from the Temple. She was honored with flowers from six other 25 year members including Mrs Fred Bowie Mrs Fred S Curtis Mrs Lou Haley Mrs Abbie Morris Mrs Seth Stewart and Mrs Harry Williams. The surprise presentation was made by Mrs Stewart.
Perry won the checkers finals at Central fire headquarters last Wednesday to obtain the Arthur F. Mayo trophy. The event began with 20 entrants three weeks earlier and narrowed to a final between Perry and Edward Arsenault.
