Maine paper veteran Fred W. Sanborn, publisher of the Norway Advertiser since 1883 after acquiring the Oxford County Democrat, dies. He was a famed fly fisherman and generous donor. mourned by Maine’s newspaper fraternity and his community.

Frank Pratt of Augusta was sentenced to 60 days in Kennebec county jail after being found guilty of drunken driving following a collision on the Bath Brunswick road near Mill Pond. He previously pled guilty to driving without a license and was fined 10 plus costs 4.95 or 30 days, with the jail terms to run concurrently.
The Old Age Assistance division reports 2,483 elderly pensions paid in March, bringing total checks since December to 5,066. About $100,000 has been paid, with an average grant of $20 per month and roughly 5,500 applications investigated.
Eben L. Harmon of Brunswick, 19, pleaded guilty in municipal court to breaking and entering at Hotel Sedgwick. His $2,000 bond was reduced to $500 with sureties, while Lawrence W. Alexander and Henry Dube face charges. Alexander released without bonds, Dube remains in custody.
The Ladies Aid of the Winter Street church held a Silver Tea in the parlor with Mrs. Joseph O Purdue and Mrs. Walter H. Bowker pouring. Mrs. Fred K. Sturtevant sang five songs with Mrs. Carl Albee. A rummage committee meeting was held for an upcoming sale in the men's rooms on April 20. Hostesses included Mrs. Arthur C. Lemont and others. about 50 members and guests attended. Rev Joseph O Purdue continued Lenten talks from James Gordon Gilkey's book You Can Master Lie. The next meeting is set for October in the parlors.
Fell Moret, chief engineer of the Bank Fire Department, will read a paper on the explosion and destruction of Plant's Garage on March 1. The study will be presented at the Maine State Fire Chiefs Association meeting in Bangor on April 12 with photos taken soon after the blaze. Morse will also read a related paper at the New England Fire Chiefs Convention in Burlington, Vermont, June 22 to 24.
Police report two minor automobile accidents in the city Saturday afternoon. A coupe driven by James Steen collided with a truck driven by Arthur W. Brown near the Maine Central freight shed on Commercial street causing slight damage. A sedan driven by Mrs Sumner Sewall collided with a vehicle owned by Lewis Collins in front of Av Hallet Co with a dented fender.
Co. H Crawford, sheep specialist for the Department of Agriculture, says the new dog licensing law will help identify dog ownership, aiding enforcement when dogs kill sheep. He cites a Houston incident with 117 sheep killed and damages of about 2000 dollars, noting nearly 2000 sheep were killed last year with state damages totaling 11452.09.
Far and Near Missionary society of the Corliss Street church held an all day White Cross work meeting at 231 1 2 Russell Street. Ten members attended a baked bean dinner and sent greetings to Agnes Harris and Mrs John Russell at Bath Memorial Hospital. Members worked on hospital supplies and presented a quilt to president Mrs Hill. The next meeting is planned for April 15 at 10 High Street Court with a love offering and gift boxes to be opened.
James L. Eadie aged 71 died suddenly Friday at his Waterford Connecticut home from a heart attack. A 40 year leader in New England and New York textile circles he retired ten years ago but served several mills in advisory roles. He managed up to 30 mills including Globe Mill Utica Middlesex U S Bunting Lowell Pontoosuc Pittsfield Tilton and Worumbo Lisbon Falls.

The Civil Service Commission announces an open competitive exam for a Mulder (Steel) at the Navy Yard Boston with pay rates from 1.032 to 1.152 per hour. Applicants need a four year steel molding apprenticeship or four years of practical experience and must file by April 18 with the Board of Examiners or UC 1 Navy Yard Boston. Bartholomew C. Kirkpatrick named agent at Bangor after three and a half years in Rumford.
Sagadahoc county GOP delegates convened in Bangor to approve Bath proposals boosting Bath representation on the county committee from two to six, with all six Bath-nominated names accepted. New officers were named, and committees for the First District and Sagadahoc County were elected, including several Bath members and local officials.
The Maine Republican platform reaffirms Port of Portland as the state’s gateway protecting maritime traffic from discrimination and boosting labor tied to the port. It also pledges full protection and development of sea and shore fisheries through research and commercial exploration. The party claims to fulfill platform promises under the current administration and invites Maine citizens to join in maintaining free institutions and a government for all.
Lawrence Alexander and Henry Dube both 19 of Brunswick pleaded not guilty and were held to the Sagadahoc Superior Court June term after being arraigned in municipal court on a hotel Sedgwick breaking and entering charge from March 30. Alexander released on personal recognizance 500. Dube ordered to recognizance with 2000 sureties. Eben Harmon of Brunswick pleaded guilty last week and remains free on 500 bond.
Harry E. Stetson, senior member of A. D. Stetson & Son, fell on Bath National Bank stairs Wednesday, struck his head, and spent a day at home at 964 Washington Street. He was taken home for recovery and returned to work Friday.
Republican delegates from Maine's 16 counties nominated two members per county to the State Committee. Nominations include Androscoggin Judge Benjamin L. Berman and Mrs. Alice Plummer of Lisbon Falls, Cumberland Robinson Verrill of Portland and Mrs. Clara Hayes of Brunswick, and others across all counties.

Judge Walter S. Glidden purchased from Robert Braun conservator for Fidelity Trust Co. the two story wooden dwelling at 1016 Washington Street for his own occupancy. The property, long known as the Franklin Reed home, was a prominent city parcel. The Gliddens plan to move in about May 15.
Genesta chapter O E S entertained Rainbow Girls Assembly three of South Portland Friday evening. Dorothy Miller of South Portland was initiated. Tokens were given to each girl, and the mother adviser received a colonial bouquet. Flowers with rainbow ribbons were presented to Mrs. David Y. Alkazin. A capacity audience attended and refreshments followed. Guest officers night is set for April 15.
The Junior Garden club met Friday at the Cosmopolitan club led by Mrs. Emily Moulton. The topic was Wild Life Conservation with papers on sanctuaries. Prize winners Sally Hyde Dorothy Gilchrist and Dorothy Johansen received miniature gardens and flowers. Twenty members attended as games and refreshments followed. Next meeting set for April 15.
Captain Robert Levin, Ralph Houston, Bernard Pratt, Warren Hogan, James Middleton, and David MacDonald were named by Coach Cromwell to receive letters for their basketball season at North Grammar.
Richard Howard, secretary of the Lewiston and Auburn Shoe Workers Protective Association, resigned Thursday after members protested his holding office in an employee group while having announced his partial purchase of a controlling interest in the Five Pokum moccasin factory at South Paris.
Mason Lindsey a senior chemical engineer at New York University and son of Clarence H. Lindsey of Wood Ridge New Jersey received one of six Tau Beta Pi fellowships. He won a $1000 award to study at any engineering school but chose MIT for graduate work. Lindsey is active in Phi Lambda Upsilon Iota Alpha and Perstat et Praestare and chairs student engineering groups.
Thomas F. Reynolds, 83, longtime Bath police figure and deputy sheriff staffer, died Thursday at his home 1345 Washington St after five years of illness. Born in Cambridge, he moved to Bath 54 years ago from shipyards, survived by wife, three daughters and two sons. He was a member of St. Mary's church.
The Daughters of Isabella study class held a regular meeting in the club rooms last Tuesday with Rev. David P. Surette as guest speaker. The next meeting is set for April 26 with a speaker to be announced. Hostesses will be Mrs. Wilfred F. Skal ing and Mrs. Frank T. Fortier. Maine merchants form a consolidated effort as the Maine Independent Merchants Association votes to retain legal counsel to represent 12 000 independents in state legislative matters.
The Beacon Street gathering hosted by the Ladies' Aid and Junior Aid committees featured decorations from Kennebec Greenhouses, table singing, a male quartet led by Rev. Jesse Kenderdine, and a church family prayer. Souvenir programs promoted the pre Easter preaching series as the annual fellowship to help the church avoid a deficit.
