Sagadahoc Fertilizer Co Growth from Humble Start to 12,000 Tons
Beck in 1878 the first lot of commercial fertilizer to be manufactured in Bowdoinham was mixed by hand in an iron kettle. From that small start to last year’s output of over 12,000 tons, the Sagadahoc Fertilizer Co. grew into a significant Maine industry founded in 1880 by the Kendalls. The firm later changed hands, rebuilt after a fire, and expanded with new machinery to meet wartime demands. The plant employs about 20 at Bowdoinham, with seasonal hires, and provides a free soil testing service to farmers.

Mr and Mrs Edward E Cooke of 38 Willow Street celebrate their sixty second wedding anniversary with a quiet Saturday at home. Allen Quinn a nine year old Huse School pupil and son of Mr and Mrs Ernest Quinn of 430 Lark Street was struck by a taxi about 425 Monday afternoon near the Opera House. He was knocked unconscious but regained consciousness at Memorial Hospital and was said to have only a slight concussion. The taxi driven by Crawford L Robinson struck him as he darted into the street from the north curb. Patrolman Joseph Williams investigated. Mrs Quinn witnessed the event. Nora Rand of Bath Iron Works Transportation Department was lodging with her mother in Augusta.
