The old 1846 bridge between East Brunswick and Bath carried farms to Bath and surrounding towns. On March 2 1896 floodwaters and ice from the Androscoggin swept away the span and left only two stone piers. The bridge was never rebuilt amid ongoing debates.
William E. Milliken announced Thursday morning his resignation as supervisor of the Bath Community Center. In three years he built its popularity, led a center orchestra, organized dances, renovated interiors, and expanded teen activities. His letter to the Recreation Commission said his resignation would take effect when the center closes for summer or earlier if the commission desires.
The Bath Red Cross annual campaign reports progress with house to house canvass teams led by Mrs. Harold Rubin. Ward captains and workers listed across seven wards and outlying areas, urging timely giving and issuing Red Cross buttons and stickers to show support and spread the message.
After the Bath Rotary club luncheon at the Central church parish house on Tuesday, four members visited Morse High School to present a vocational program. Jud Miller announced trades and building careers, Bill Meneally highlighted public utilities, Eugene Desmond spoke on retail merchandise, and Rev. Laforest E. Hodgkins discussed needs in churches and religious groups.
Bailey Evening School of Industries ended the 1950 51 season with open house and 180 certificates awarded to students in 17 courses. A Morse High School gym display showcased work from electricity machine shop mechanical drawing woodworking and other classes while the Community Orchestra performed under Mrs Persis Bates.
Sagadahoc Rod Gun and Skeet Association met at the South End PTA hall with about 40 members. The program featured Steve Powell of Swan Island and a 16 mm film on wildlife, deer box trapping, and a discussion of completing the North Bath clubhouse.
Mrs. Merrill G. Welles of Belmont Massachusetts watches her three year old Skye Terrier Becky entertain children and shoppers on Front street in front of Senter's store. Becky, bored while Mrs Welles shops, paws the horn and sounds short blasts drawing a crowd including 20 to 25 schoolchildren. The dog, from Skye Island Scotland, is playful and intelligent often fetching newspapers and carrying small packages.
Bath city council in special session adopted the fiscal year 1951 52 salary and wage schedules for all city employees including department heads. Chairman Rodney E Ross noted that most salaries were raised about 3 per week, supplementing the October raise. Clerks in certain offices are placed on an increasing scale.
City Council sets pay for City Manager Clerk to Manager and department clerks. City Clerk’s Office lists salaries for Clerk and clerks plus per diem extras. Clerks receive annual steps 1560, 1716, 1820 with 5 dollar per diem, plus fees from state statutes and licenses as allowed.
Mrs Russell Snow Hitchcock hosted Bath Garden club at 658 Washington street for the annual meeting and a review of the year's achievements. Guest speaker Mrs Arthur Colby discussed shrubs and legends linking old beliefs to plant names and lore.
The Bath City Council finalizes a 915 206.71 budget for 1951 52, with a tax levy of about 601 928.16 to be raised by taxation based on a 10 492 315 valuation. A 4.60 mill increase pays for city employees and teachers while other items drop 1.3 mills. Funds finance cemetery and fire gear, sewer study, street resurfacing, new street lighting, and recreation center changes.
