The Times Company at 83 Front Street Bath Maine publishes weekly issues every Thursday. B Nichols serves as President and Treasurer while Harry C Webber is the editor. the paper is entered at the Bath post office for second class circulation.
A photo of the old Bay Bridge across the Androscoggin at East Brunswick stirs Bath area residents. Debates linger over why it was not rebuilt after 1896 floods as tolls and costs were blamed. now many see potential economic and scenic benefits of a new crossing.
Maine editors mourn the death of Frederick G. Fossett born 1865 in Portland. He joined the Portland Argus staff in 1884 rose to prominence as a political writer in Augusta during legislative sessions, edited the Waterville Sentinel, and taught journalism at Colby College. He also worked 20 years at the Boston Transcript and contributed to other papers.
The Maine Department Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War and Auxiliary held a district rally Saturday at the Huseeer I Supper with about 200 attendees. Beulah Freeman of Saco led candidate degree work for the auxiliary and A Lawrence Calderwood directed the men’s degree team from Portland.
Earl Morong of Bath, recently discharged from Memorial hospital after a stay, praises the Bath hospital staff. He says services are constantly available and commends doctors nurses orderlies and administration for exceeding expectations during his hospitalization.
The Bailey School year ends with a list of graduates and staff across divisions. Names include Frates and Haggett families along with instructors in dressmaking sewing shorthand and typing. Session participants feature Doris Veilleux Edna McRae Priscilla Rainey and others across beginners advanced typing and related classes.
Elizabeth D. Moffatt, Bath state representative, explains her position on the Bath debt increase and school expansion. She states she spoke at a March 7 public hearing, denies DOE siding, defends actions, and calls for a public apology from Lor ing Addison while defending her honesty and public service.
Gloria Jean Ranks, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. George Ranks, celebrated her sixth birthday Friday with a home party hosting friends. Games crowned Robert Towle winner. refreshments included ice cream cake and punch prepared by Miss Alice Staples and Mrs. John Williams. a screen feature followed.
Dr John W Brush, professor of Church History at Andover Newton Theological Seminary in Newton MA, will be a guest speaker at the Chapel Hour of the University of Life on April 15. A New York native and Colby graduate, he earned a Yale PhD and Colby D D in 1939, with prior pastorates in Portland and Waterville from 1923 to 1929.
Farmers and other businesses may obtain DO-97 priority ratings under NPA Regulation Four for maintenance and repair needs, with limits tied to 1950 spending and quarterly quotas beyond $1,000. The rating is extendible and records must be kept if used. Inquiries go to Sagadahoc County PMA Office in Lewiston Maine.
The state flower of Montana is the bitter root. The plant, known for its tough roots and bright roots, is celebrated in a line of state symbols.
In a Bath City Council hearing March 7 and a Times column, Elizabeth D. Moffatt questioned whether the State Department of Education advised against applying for federal funds under Public Laws 815 and 874. Superintendent Loring R. Additon confirms the department’s role as information transmitter and says fund applications remain a local prerogative.
Mr and Mrs Abraham Kra mer hosted at 67 Court street for Cecil N Lilly who departs soon for duty in the Army at Fort Devens Massachusetts Lilly formerly worked six years at Steeves Market attended Morse High School and belongs to Bath Lodge of Elks. Attending were his parents brother and numerous local friends and relatives.
Charles Brenton Ayer celebrated his sixth birthday Saturday at his parents home 1401 Washington street with a party for friends. Games were played and gifts received. Refreshments were served from a St Patrick's Day themed table. Present were Joan and Linda Ayer Deborah Marr Carlene Laucier Elwin Rittall Craig Ayer and his sister Marilyn.
Municipal court arraigned Robert A. Cressey of 41 Willow Street on a charge of driving under the influence. Four others faced intoxication charges, one case continued, three placed on probation with fines and court costs totaling $11.50. Cressey found guilty of drunken driving on March 17, fined $100 plus $8.94 costs, and appealed to the June term. State trooper Ray Orcutt was arresting officer.
A school meeting Tuesday morning discussed plans for a class trip in April to New York City.
A new Field Trial Group named Merrymeeting Field Trials was formed in Bath. Officers include Issa King as First Carney, Senet Yaw retient as secretary L Wade, John A. Greene Jr. as treasurer, and William F. Mussenden as director. The group joined The Association of New England Field Trial Clubs and plans spring and fall trials for pointing dogs with May 12 and 13 set for the first event.
A photo in the March 24 issue highlights Morven, the Princeton house of former New Jersey governor and ambassador Walter E Edge and his wife Camilla Sewall. Known as Cornwallis era home, the brick residence sits with a large ell and a rich garden. The Edges summer at the former Sewall residence at Small Point Beach.
Sportsmen members in Topsham elected Frank L. Siegars of Topsham as president of the Merrymeeting Sportsmen's Association at their annual meeting held last week at Tops ham grange hall. An evening supper was served by the Ladies' Aid. Guest speaker Capt Mansfield L Hunt USA R former Brunswick Naval Air Station manager discussed the Army organized reserve corps and presented a film of his work. He is now on temporary duty at Fort Williams Cape Elizabeth.
Hermie Freeman 136 of Bangor and Bath, Maine, a regional lightweight and welterweight titlist, was KO'd in the fifth round by George Araujo 133 of Providence, R. I., in a 10 round non-title matchup at Fall River Casino before about 766 fans. Araujo dominated with a sequence of left hooks and right crosses to score the full count.
Governor Frederick G. Payne signed legislation raising the minimum drinking age from 18 to 21. The law prohibits sale of bottled beer and ale to those under 21 and bans on premises consumption of hard liquor and malt beverages by under 21s. Rep. Elizabeth D. Moffatt sponsored the bill.
The Maine Department of Health and Welfare reports for Sagadahoc County for the week ending March 17: chickenpox two cases in Bath and two in West Bath, influenza twenty two cases in Bath, mumps one case in Bath, and whooping cough two cases in Bath.
Red Cross fund drive continues with arrangements by Mrs George Musk for pickup of contributions. Mrs Mary Larrabee of High street is recovering after illness and confinement to her home for over a week amid the epidemic.
Venita Farnham of 876 High Street spent Easter weekend visiting relatives in Brewer.
The Maine Diocesan Council of Catholic Women schedules a March 29 meeting in Augusta with Dorothy Day as general speaker at 11:00 a.m. and Rev. Francis Nugent and Most Rev Daniel Feeney speaking at a luncheon at the Augusta House. Reservations go to Mrs. Leonce G. Pepin by Wednesday.
Coach Robert Frink led Morse High faculty in organizing a spring football program. Thirty three boys attended a meeting last Wednesday and will begin practice immediately in the Morse gymnasium. The plan avoids interference with baseball by including only non-diamond squad players. Eighth graders in the city are invited to join.
Patricia Rice a first grade pupil at Huse Memorial School celebrated her seventh birthday with classmates Friday afternoon from two to three at a classroom party hosted by her mother Mrs George Rice with help from teacher Mrs Evelyn Percy. The youngsters enjoyed party games and ice cream cookies and candy.
Dromore Farm Bureau hosted an all day meeting at the grange hall with 18 members and two guests. Home demonstration agent Mrs. Beryl Barton Hill presented forenoon and afternoon topics on nutrition and food buying, dinner featured stuffed baked haddock and vegetables, and the group planned the August Summer fair as their annual fundraiser.
The Post Office will launch a new money order system on July 1 1951 and discontinue sales of the existing Postal Note card form by month end. The blue standard money order remains available through June 30 1951. Postal Notes were first issued February 1 1945 in amounts from 0 to 10 dollars and over 70 percent of money order sales used the postal note. The new system promises features and lower operating costs with details to follow.
