Bridge Crashes Into Androscoggin River at Brunswick
The Maine Central bridge over the Androscoggin between Brunswick and Topsham collapsed Saturday around 2 15 p m due to ice pressure and strong current from the freshet. Five gravel cars were run onto the span to test its strength but failed to halt the failure. The 1400 foot structure is valued near a half million dollars and crews could do little as it toppled into the water.

Bath Struggles With Flood Power Loss And Restorations
Bath suffered a major flood power outage from 11.45 Friday night to 4.30 a.m. Saturday affecting heating for homes and delaying restaurants. A baby was born at 3 a.m. with flashlight aid as Central Maine Power crews worked to restore service by 4.30 p.m. after flooding cut the Farmingdale station and damaged lines. Brunswick also lacked power from Friday night into Saturday as crews attempted to span the inundated substation and reestablish supply.

Bridge at Richmond Collapses Under Ice and Flood
The Kennebec river near Richmond and Dresden washed away two western spans of the Richmond Dresden bridge early Saturday. Ice estimated at 25 feet deep and flood waters caused the collapse, taking piers with it. Harold Houdlette and Leland Siegars escaped as the bridge buckled. The Richmond Bee basement flooded and the town’s pumping station overflowed. many basements flooded and efforts began to salvage the press. The bridge opened 1931, built by the state, with five spans and a draw. A large gathering including Governor Gardner attended the opening ceremony.
