Maine club women and garden clubs push roadside beautification amid limited funds. Communities should contribute small efforts to improve scenery. Abolish roadside dumps with penalties for littering. Proposals to revive fishing as a livelihood hinge on addressing sewage flows into rivers and tributaries.
At a Saturday meeting the mortgage on the T. W. Hyde camp building was burned. Edward W. Bridgham gave a dedicatory address. The hall honors Civil War veterans. County Commissioner Joseph W. Randlette spoke on fire prevention and protection, noting his long involvement with fire chiefs associations.
Bath will not receive the new fire alarm system now despite summer and fall testing. City may manage without it for the present.
The YMCA Church Basketball league selected a boy from each team to receive a sportsmanship medal. Teams voted, a five member committee reviewed results, and all selections were approved. The awards honor players with exemplary conduct at the annual banquet.
On their return from a brief wedding trip to Portland, Lynwood Vernon Miller and his wife were honored at a wedding dinner hosted by his parents at 220 Center Street with 28 guests. The event featured a bride's cake centerpiece, a social hour, and many gifts.
Winter Street Men’s club members welcomed a ladies committee led by Mrs Edward Daley to host a supper and bridge party in church parlors at eight. Menu includes creamed chicken, potato chips, peas, rolls, pickles, jelly, sherbet, cake, and coffee. Tickets sold at William Falls shoe store.
Central Grammar School Division Two presented Abraham Lincoln and George Washington programs under Miss Elizabeth D. McGrath. Students read plays and poems by Hugh Fleming Winifred Richards Beulah Pratt Alice Coleman Doris Armstrong Leroy Lord Louie Norton Roswell Haskell John Merrill and others.
The Friendly Four, four women who meet weekly to play cards, marked their tenth anniversary with a dinner party at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Max Katz on Cobb road. Husbands attended. prizes in beano and card games included a silver beverage set won by Mrs. Morris S. Povich and a smoking set won by Arthur W. Gediman.
Lewiston weather prognosticator Sam Morrill foresees a tough March with a warmest stretch from mid to late month. He predicts three storm periods from the 5th to 11th, 16th to 22nd, and the last five days, plus possible earth shocks in early March. The Bates College Student Council amendments failed for lack of a full enrollment vote, likely keeping old rules for the March 18 elections.
A special communication of Polar Star Lodge No 114 F A M observed the 11th Past Masters night in the Masonic temple. Officers presided, diplomas granted to George J. Goodwin Donald N. Small Harold E. Cutting W Percy Marks Edward W. Sampson. Supper by Olympia cafe featured waitresses and tunes by Katahdin Mountaineers and Masonic quartet. Flowers from Kennebec Greenhouses.
The Sterling Bible class of Corliss Street church held its regular monthly business meeting Monday with 21 members present. Mrs. John H. Hunt presided and led the devotional. Bible questions were by Mrs. William Hill.
Lynwood Vernon Miller and Adrienne Thibault were married at St Marys Church in a 4 45 ceremony officiated by Rev Ludger Melancon. The couple, with families present including Miss Anna Johnson and Miss Alice Johnson of Lewiston, plan to reside at 220 Center Street Brunswick after a Sunday reception.
Bath police received 9 50 p m report that Frank Thompson’s car was stolen from 654 High Street. Thompson’s car later found abandoned in Brunswick at 11 25 p m undamaged. Local taxi driver Ralph E Legard reported his taxi stolen from in front of Hotel Phoenix and found stuck in snow at Dockbridge Upper Washington Street at 1 50 a m. Police have no clues. Also Sanford high school freshmen presented an abridged Gilbert and Sullivan operetta H M S Pinafore before a large audience.
Rev. George B. Wolstenholme spoke on causes of unrest and the rise of revolutionary feeling tied to communism, citing his 1920 Inter-Church World Movement work and I W W propaganda. He described Western mines and Centralia clashes, warned of a red movement, and contrasted small factory relations with large centralized units.
Fire department Engine 4 logged a busy Thursday morning. At 7 40 a furnace pipe failed at Omar R Perry 6 Bridge Street igniting cellar woodwork. Perry doused flames with a garden hose with minor upstairs smoke. At 9 20 a skylight collapsed at Torrey Roller Bushing Works hitting the sprinkler system and triggering a response. At 10 55 Engine 4 returned when the mechanism failed again.
Wild Rose troop of Girl Scouts met at Grace church parish house with 20 members present. They did a code review and games, discussed compass and first aid, and learned about saving for Scout Summer camp led by Evelyn Trott. Attending were Eleanor Danforth, Marjorie Nichols, Constance Stickney, and Miss Trott’s aides.
Bath resident Mrs Carl E Albee of 678 Washington Street has been unanimously elected a colleague of the American Guild of Organists by the New York council. She trained under Miss M Jennie Melcher, is organist at Winter Street Church since 1924, and serves as vice president and accompanist for Les Camarades Musicaux, one of Bath’s few such collaborators.
A 1931 ton and a half Ford truck seized with liquor by the sheriff at Winneganee brought 6200 at Saturday’s auction. The out of town buyer, who did not disclose his name, secured the vehicle and load.
The legal affairs committee in Augusta reported favorably on a bill to repeal an old provision requiring innkeepers to provide stable room hay and provender for guests horses and cattle. The item hints lawmakers may have misread Train's story in a Sauagey Evening Post.
Myrtle Lodge No. 8 U O of I O L members visited Merrymeeting Lodge No. 7 in Brunswick on a Friday afternoon. A bountiful supper preceded the regular meeting and the Myrtle Lodge degree team presented the degree for one candidate, led by senior representative Mrs. Elmer F Campbell. The Blue Bird bus carried attendees including numerous lodge members and ladies names listed.
Winter Street Fireside club schedules seven Sunday evening talks starting March 10 with Mrs. Kenneth C. Sills of Brunswick and continues through April 14 with Jefferson C. Smith of Waare state secretary of the Y. M. C. A. Notes list speakers: N Gratz Jackson, John E. L. Huse, Ollie Berg of South Portland, Miss Lynnette Walker.
Mrs Walter M Hill 73 North Street suffered a fracture to the left elbow and torn ligaments after slipping on ice near the Patten Free library entrance Saturday evening. She spent the night at Bath Memorial Hospital after X rays and returned home Sunday.
Alderman Edward F. Miller of Ward 4 has missed zero city council meetings in five years. Four years were on the council and the current year on the board of aldermen. The Sampson family of Skowhegan now includes three registered druggists with Edwin L. Sampson and C. Gertrude Sampson passing state exams. Sampson's Drug Store now lists four registered druggists including Paul L. Woodward.
The Past Noble Grands Club of Queen Loma Rebekah lodge met at Mrs. Horace W. Ward’s home for a February business and social session. Officers were elected with Mrs. Henry T. B. Leeman named president and Mrs. Albert H. Thompson as vice president. Three tables of contract were played. prizes went to Mrs. Wallace L. Atwood first, Mrs. Charles E. Helah second, and Mrs. Leeman conso lect. Several members were absent due to illness, and others were recovering from injuries or ailments. Hostesses for the March meeting will be Mrs. Helah and Mrs. Far rin.
The Board of Registration added 124 names to the voting list, bringing total eligible voters to over 4600 for Monday's election. Seven men and 46 women registered, with Wards 2 and 6 each contributing 23. About 75 percent of registrants enrolled.
A charity concert and ball sponsored by the Brunswick club drew a capacity crowd at the Town hall on Friday night, following heavy initial expenses for entertainment. The event was noted as one of the season’s most outstanding and successful.
