Canoes of Indians Shaped Early Colonial Trade Routes

The Philadelphia Inquirer notes that flat bottom canoes, often dugouts or birch bark types, served as the main transport in the Chesapeake and southern colonies before roads. From six to forty men, and even fifty barrels of tar, could be carried. South Carolina Huguenots adapted canoes by inserting a keel plank to haul up to eighty or more barrels of pitch. Canoes moved by poles or paddles in shallow inlets and rivers, shaping trade and travel for colonists.
