Bath's oldest couple Mr. and Mrs. John H. Crosman mark 66 years of marriage and the nation’s flag birthday. They credit “right living” for longevity, enjoy gardening and needlework, and recall farm life with little illness except pneumonia. Continued on Page Two.
The Boardobjects to the Vine street grade near the Legard lot deeming it too short and steep. A two member committee will protest to the Governor and Council with City Engineer Litchfield and legal adviser Bridgham. Proposals include buying remaining Vine street south side property to Water street and widening Water street to Depot square while abandoning the Vine to square route. Alderman Huse cautions about winter dangers from a snowbound grade. Mrs. Charles Israel of White Plains is visiting.
Memorial Sunday in Bath featured a parade by Boothbay Harbor and Topsham firemen with Bath Veteran Firemen's Association members to Oak Grove Cemetery. Drum Major Edwin J. Emmons led the procession with the Baxter band. Rev. George Wolstenholme delivered the memorial address over William Roderick’s grave.
Grace Church School held its commencement exercises during the Sunday church service with a choir performance. The rector spoke on wisdom and reported the year's administration, attendance, and offerings while prizes were awarded for perfect and excellent attendance and learning collects to named students.
Ralph Dunton aged six celebrated his birthday on Thursday at his mother Mrs Luella Dunt home on Washington street. It was a jolly party with a beau tifully decorated table and delicious refreshments including the birthday cake. Guests present included Jane Stevens John Larrabee Barbara Mank Clifton Nickerson Richard Pennell James McQuarrie Clinton Child Buddy Mank Leon Pennell Jr Marilyn Cummings Barbara Mary and Polly Nickerson.
William B Kendall of Bowdoinham organized a large gathering of New England and Maine Wool Growers associations at Long Branch farm Dewdernham. Attendees toured Kendall’s flock, enjoyed a luncheon, and heard remarks from officials including Governor Brewster’s stand-in Frank Washburn and others while weather forced the afternoon program into Merrymeeting Grange.
Billy Sunday and Homer Rodeheaver travel from Bangor to Bath for a 2 p.m. meeting at the Wiscasset Tabernacle. They board the 7.35 a.m. Bangor train, reach Brunswick at 10.28 a.m., and reach Bath about 11.30. Aides photograph the party on Lincoln Street before a 1 p.m. ferry to Wiscasset for a large Lincoln county crowd.
Sept Clinton D. Wilson of the Bath and West Bath School Union was unanimously reelected at the annual meeting. He received a 0 percent increase to a total $2,200 from the state and will keep $2,500 from the local union. Bath and West Bath board members and staff were present as resignations were read and Kristin Lockery was named a new teacher. Supt Wilson will award diplomas at Morse High School graduation. Roll of accounts No. 4 for $1,679.79 was approved.
Rev Francis W OBrien of Greenwood Baptist Brooklyn and founder of People s Baptist Bath will preach in London s Metropolitan Tabernacle this summer and at Nottingham Tabernacle. He and wife depart June 21 on Aquitania for Paris then Switzerland and Rome visiting St Paul sites. They return via Nimes France to study Baptist work there.
Maurice Blaisdell a 14 year old Central Grammar student dove from Cummings wharf after four pm and swam just over a mile across the Kennebec landing at Sasanea Bluff in about forty minutes. He and two friends in a leaky skiff watched as he completed the crossing at one of the river’s widest points.
The Bath High School Alumni Association members in Battery H 240th CC A prompted a Thursday drill cancellation. Horace McClure obtained special permission from Col. George A. Fogg to avoid mandatory attendance for the weekly drill.
Deputy Attorney General Sanford L. Fogg reports a 1927 statute authorizes the state highway commission to designate through highways and place stop signs to give through traffic priority. He suggests contacting municipal officers to cooperate on uniform signs and notes authority questions for signs in city and town streets.
The Kennebec bridge directors, with Governor and Council approval, awarded Bath approach work to Kerr & Houston of Portland at 0 152 50 and Woolwich approach work to Litchfield & Douglas of Brunswick at 26 165. Public interest grew as a caterpillar tractor crane and a four ton gasoline locomotive were shown, promising efficient cement work for the roadway.
Bath prepares for Dollar Day on Tuesday June 21 with many leading merchants offering unusually low prices. A six page herald details bargains and shoppers are expected to visit as the Kennebec bridge project attracts attention.
Parents are invited to enroll children in the Summer Reading Course. Each child must read ten books from a graded list of 200. Examinations will be held at the Children's Room with Mrs. Troop on September 1 2 or 3 1927, and those who pass will receive a reward in early September.
Cyrus TH, IK. Curtis, prominent Philadelphia native and Maine resident, funds a full page Letogravure ad in major newspapers. The campaign highlights Camden harbor and Maine hospitality with a Lyndonia image, costing thousands and rivaling the Maine Development Commission's yearly spend. Curtis supports Maine’s publicity drive at personal expense.
The Maine Branch of the National Congress of Parents and Teachers opened its annual convention at Morse High School with large attendance. City officials Mayor Charles Cahill and Supt. Clinton Wilson spoke in support of the schools and teachers. State president Mrs. Joseph D. Sinto presided as sessions began, with remarks by Mrs. Percival Bathelder and speakers Eugene Lies and Miss Nidith Peekhium among others.
The program featured Robert Bobbitch and Mrs. Fred Cary with solo numbers and a duet. Mrs Hateh performed A Song of Sunshine and Dope by Posti while Mrs Cary sang Her Dream and Tis Evening from Pique Dame. An original piece by Alice May Douglas was read by Mrs At Line, a former teacher and North Center Association member.
