The Maine primary enters its final week with nearly a thousand candidates seeking nominations. Parties stay neutral until after primaries, then campaigns intensify. A referendum on the Maine prohibitory law looms, promising a spirited fall vote.
Builders replaced aging long wooden bridge at Winnegance two years ago with a permanent highway over a creek and flats, eliminating repair costs since 1801. A similar conversion is under way at Whiskeay, removing wooden bridges and adding a durable road, promising further savings for Bath.
Secretary of the Interior and Public Works Iories on Thursday formally rejected the request for funds to carry out the Quoddy Bay project. Previous government boards had also turned down the proposition, disappointing eastern state residents who hoped for federal assistance.

The fire rolls approved by Chief Engineer Charles E. Parks were confirmed by the aldermen last Wednesday. The list names Hose Co. 1, Hook and Ladder 1, Engine Co. 2, Combination Co. 3, and Engine Co. 4 with officers and crews including foremen, clerks, stewards, axemen, pipemen, leading hosemen, battmen, and substitutes. Compensation is fixed by the city and all are subject to city ordinances.
Arrowsie school entertained the Mothers and friends of the district with a marionette show under Mrs. Georgie Walker. Pupils performed realistic puppets, a modern living room scene, and three Lincoln life scenes with a tap dance and fox trot.

The Sacred Heart Circle No. 551 Daughters of Isabella postponed June events and admitted Mrs. Donald Green and Mrs. Robert E. Linekin. Mrs. Carl G. Kronstrand named June social committee chair. A card party by the sewing circle is planned for June 13 at the Knights of Columbus hall.
Superior court jurors in Androscoggin county return a plaintiff’s verdict for 337.50 in favor of Carita Wentworth of Auburn formerly of Bath against the Railway Express Agency. Wentworth sought 500 dollars claiming two trunks shipped from New York to Boston and then to Brockton Massachusetts in 1930 were not returned.
Mrs Weston P Holman of Camden formerly of this city died Monday in Bath and was guest at dinner by Mrs Elizabeth Tedford of Mechanic street. Rev Mr Holman spent the day in Portland.
Angelo Mana of Boston is imported Friday night to face El Kid Barrilito at the Arcade arena in the main bout Promoter Nick Michalos announced after negotiations Mana has recent wins over K O Labbe and K O Blouin in Maine and drawn with Johnny Bangs of Holyoke The undercard features Johnny McCarty vs Pep Henry six rounds while Young Sharkey meets Kid Duchaine and Pop-eye Pippin faces Kid Poulakos in four rounders.
Music committee of the First Baptist Church hosted a supper event in the church vestry on Wednesday of last week. The team included Mrs. Herbert E Worrey Mrs. Arthur J Dunton Mrs. Arthur I Stuart and Mrs. Cedric A Martin with Mr Dunton acting as toastmaster. The choir performed several numbers and the sketches included Clothesline Gossip and Aunt Patience’s Doughnuts.
William C. Perkins of the Bath Y M C A reports near 100 boys attended Saturday registration for the State Y M C A camp. The Davenport Trustees fund 62 boys, prioritizing the needy, with many Bath Military and Naval Asylum youths included among the selected.

Chevrolet sedan driven by Theodre S. Bird of Rockland was lightly damaged when it left the road to avoid colliding with a sedan driven by Donald Kennedy of Lynn, Mass. Kennedy swerved left to pass an oil truck, forcing Bird into the ditch to avoid a head on crash. State highway officer John P. Crosby investigated the crash.
Mrs. Jack Wade of Upper Washington street found an egg described as extremely large in her hen house on Saturday. The egg came from her Rhode Island Reds, part of a prolific flock including year old chickens that have produced unusually large eggs this year.
Arcturus, the two foot Arctic owl mascot of the Bowdoin MacMillan Arctic Expedition, departs Portland June 16 to the Labrador coast. The bird, kept at Moose Hill Bird Sanctuary in Sharon, has thrived on hamburg steak and has attracted crowds of visitors while awaiting release to his northern habitat.
Sagadahoc council of the Knights of Columbus displayed a World War flag in Union block honoring Veterans of Foreign Wars. The 51 stars represent council members who served, with a gold star for John James Flaherty who died aboard the destroyer Jacob Jones after torpedo attack on December 6, 1917. The Bath VFW honors him with the Dyer Flaherty Post name.
The Columbus club held its annual meeting on Thursday evening and elected officers including James E. McLaughlin as grand knight, James C. Mulligan deputy grand knight, Edward J. Murphy treasurer, Stephen McPhee chancellor, P. Gurney recording secretary, Andrew Lozier warden, John Curran outside guard, Albert Lozier inside guard, M. C. Fitzgerald advocate, and Edmund Arsenault trustee for three years.
Voters face mismatches between specimen ballots and actual Bath ballots as candidates listed outside Bath appear on the statewide sample. The Department of State explains uniform ballots across counties. Bath voters see five Bath candidates with only two votes allowed, while other districts list one or two names for their classes.
