More than 200 attended the Rod and Gun Club ladies night supper and meeting where Wade estimated open season fishing at about 18 weeks. He cited last year’s licenses totaling 192,000 and argued four million fish could be caught weekly across the season. Bath woman injured in collision with railroad bridge
A Bath 25 year old woman Ann Sweeney was hospitalized with a fractured nose and rib after a car driven by her husband John M. Sweeney struck an overhead railroad bridge abutment on Oak Grove avenue. The 1951 car was heavily damaged. John Sweeney, charged with driving while under the influence, was released on $300 bond as the case was continued to June 7 in Municipal Court.

Augusta parking district eyed after Bath talks

Bath built destroyer Dealey to be commissioned
The Bath Iron Works built destroyer USS Dealey DE 1006 will be commissioned at 3 30 p m Thursday at the Boston Naval Shipyard. The ship, named for the late Commander David Dealey Medal of Honor winner, features modern lighting air conditioning and crew conveniences with nine officers and 140 enlisted aboard.

Bath Health Council reports on year’s school screenings and services
Mrs. Marjorie Boucher cites 1190 classroom visits and 109 home conferences with parents, 477 children inspected, 19 minor illness exclusions, 18 heart irregularities found by Dr. John F. Dougherty, and 13 of 25 children seen by their physicians. Eye tests reached 360 with 99 referred, 46 followed up. 1800 children had hearing tests with 41 referred and at least 100 needing audiometer tests. Immunization clinics served 323 children with 62 smallpox, 41 diphtheria boosters, 265 boosters. Lions Club dental work aided 35 children, glasses for 24, prize for 100 percent dentist attendance. Two speech classes held by Mrs. Esther Hawley. Memorial Day parade noted with large attendance and services at city park led by Chaplain Raymond Hart.

Local boys aboard Bennington escape as ship explodes
A Bath boy a former Bath boy and a Topsham boy who graduated Morse High were among the crew of the carrier USS Bennington. The blast killed about 100 and injured over 200. Albert Cummings narrowly missed a mess room explosion after stopping to shave. Joseph A Butler a chief pipe fitter from Portsmouth NH survived unharmed. his son John had served with his father but was discharged in March and now works in Portsmouth.
