Larrabee Claims Don Was Top Heavy After Tragic Voyage
Fred W. Larrabee testified that the excursion boat Don was top heavy and crowded when she carried 34 people to their deaths in Lower Casco Bay. He said the vessel left his yard in 1936 with much more above waterline and that capacity was about 20. Albert Foster, 17, and Norman Foster's brother denied top heaviness, citing 20 to 25 typical passengers. he noted one trip with 32. Foster said 30 to 35 life preservers were aboard but none rings, and no drip pan under the carburetor, while no explosions from fumes were found at the bilges.
