Maine roadsides could become more attractive to tourists and residents if visitors and locals show more thoughtfulness. Littering with crates bottles cans paper and garbage persists despite occasional enforcement and a case where a fruit dealer cleaned up after being warned. A statewide cleanup and stricter enforcement could benefit all sections of the state.
The park's frog pond, once a dirt dumping corner, was transformed by John H. Ramsey and later John Roberts into a central fountain and rockery. Now a modern wading pool with a gravel bottom provides safe splash space for youngsters on warm days.
A Bath resident donated 25 toward a two way police radio fund, bringing the total past 400 from Police Carnival receipts toward the 800 needed. Deputy Marshal Percy Kingsbury urges more donations to complete the amount and accelerate installation for enhanced city protection.

They covered 11000 miles visiting Philadelphia Washington D C Smoky Mountains Grand Canyon California Pike's Peak Yosemite Yellowstone Denver Niagara Falls Montreal Quebec and Fort Wayne San Francisco.
The mine sweeper U S S Governor Saturday launched at Camden Shipbuilding and Marine Railways was attended by Bath residents led by Governor Sumner Sewall and Mrs Sewall along with Navy officers Commander Kiernan Lieutenant Commander Loeser Lieutenant John A Lord and their wives. Mrs Richard V R Lyman sponsored the vessel and received a ship's clock from Commander Kiernan after a buffet in the mold loft.
Notes from a Maine area social scene: Barbara Mank and Maurice Owen wed at Grace church with guests including Norman Chase of Portland, formerly Bath, and Rev. John M Swetnam of Norwich Conn. Others visited Bath on Monday. a Crescent Beach gathering featured several local ladies and families. Virginia Jewett led a Pi Beta Phi convention at Lakewood. Margaret Davis was elected Pi Beta Phi president. Er was the speaker recounting sorority history and Tennessee work. Jewett is Morse 1937 Maine 1941 alumna.
The piece traces Thomas G. Plant from a $2.50 weekly wage in a shoe factory to roles in rope walks and boiler plants. He later sold shoes door to door, built a major women’s shoe business in Lynn, Massachusetts, employed up to 5,000, and then retired after selling to United Shoe Machinery. He founded Bathpeake Country Club and supported Roosevelt in 1912.
After a Friday conference by the Board of Highways and Sewers with Edwin M Howard of Whitney and Howard Boston engineers an application was made for P W A assistance to rebuild the sewer system to handle the load from 200 new houses on West Center street. Estimated cost is 160 000 and the plan calls for a new 54 inch sewer line at the dock tapering to 42 32 and finally six inches from Lincoln street to the new project with sewage pumped into the six inch line.
A miscellaneous shower was held for Mrs. Irving Duley nee Ruth Freeman at Mrs. Albert Pinkham’s home on Court street last week. Guests included Mrs. Kenneth MacDonald and many friends. The couple received gifts and a vocal duet was performed followed by socializing and refreshments.
Mrs. Jan Byhouwer writes Evelyn Oliver and her grandparents Mr. and Mrs. Wilbur C. Oliver that the Byhouwers are well in Holland. Mr. Byhouwer works as a landscape engineer and the family is said to be living in comfort in the conquered country. The letter, mailed July 13 in Holland and routed via Lisbon to New York, notes the long ocean journey and infrequent arrivals.
The 193rd district Rotary leaders from 22 Maine clubs plus Newburyport Mass Portsmouth Dover NH clubs held a school of instruction at Belgrade Lakes Hotel. District Governor Harlan M. Bisbee conducted the sessions, opening with a fellowship dinner and conducting an institute on Rotary ways and means. The program covered club service vocational community international and youth service.
Robert Charles of Portland a driver for Je Express Service suffered minor bruises when a heavy loaded Ford truck overturned at Robinson and Washington streets. The load included motor oil girders a stove a sink groceries and more. Police suspect brake failure or load shift. Charles was treated at Dr Joseph I Smith's office.
Sixty three entries have been received for the Massachusetts Tuna Tournament to begin in Ipswich Bay Monday. With more charters pending, entries are expected to reach 70 or more. The Ipswich Bay Tuna Club hosts a pre tournament party at club headquarters Annisquam Sunday evening. Larry Hart, secretary of the Gloucester Chamber of Commerce and former Bathman, is the chief promoter.
After a shore dinner at the Ellis Homestead in Pemaquid the Daughters of Isabella enjoyed a sightseeing ride around the point. The annual event featured community singing and a Doyle's bus for the group.
Prof. John W. Warbehn of Mount Holyoke College and Mrs. Warbehn of South Hadley Massachusetts stayed with Mr and Mrs Bert Moore at Sebasco Estates overnight while journeying to Northeast Harbor. Warbehn is chairman of the Philosophy Department at Mount Holyoke College.
Henry I Gediman of 602 Middle Street completed two years as clerk at the Maine State Liquor Store Saturday night. He resigns to join Bath Iron Works in the ballast room. Donald H Crosby of 23 Center Street will fill the post as of Monday morning after resigning as Bath patrolman effective Saturday night.
Mr and Mrs Exank Deering and daughter Anne of Farmington returned after a two week outing at Brigham's Cove where they were guests of Mr Deering's brother and sister in law Judge and Mrs Gardiner Deering of Turnercourt occupying a cottage there for a fortnight
Maine apple growers lacking enough labor should contact the nearest Maine Employment Service office. Bureau official says labor shortages persist despite wage increases, with many mill workers drafted. The service places about 150 farm laborers monthly and will direct suitable workers to growers upon request.
The playground committee announced the wading pool will close in the forenoon and open only in the afternoon for the coming weeks to let children use both facilities. Supervisors will enforce afternoon use only while the pool was drained and refilled for fresh water. The fundraiser for playground equipment continues with over 80 additional ribboned medals awarded to top sellers. A special meeting is planned.
Alderman Harold J. Carter reports strong support from William S. Newell, president of Bath Iron Works Corp., for expanding the city park playground facilities. Newell notes improvements were made with little or no tax expense and urges continued development to benefit more residents.
The Cosmopolitan club holds its regular meeting on Wednesday August 6 at 7 30 p.m. in the club rooms. Mrs Charles W Messenger chairs the committee with Miss Elizabeth Deering and Mrs Mildred Nichols assisting. Mrs Fred G Nanney of Portland will be commentator and club members will serve as models. Refreshments provided by Mrs Lorraine Price and assistants.
Mrs William Constable, Miss Eleanor Brigham of Boston and Mrs Malcolm Roberts of New York visited Bath for the weekend. Mr Constable served as a judge at the Sanction Dog show held Sunday at Elmhurst.
The Commercial Trading Co will shutter its Washington and School Streets factory for an undefined period starting Thursday. About 60 employees across all branches will be affected as the Bath era group exits after a 1923 acquisition and expansion efforts.
Dr J A Randazzo assistant district health officer spoke at a weekly Co D Maine State Guard drill on Bath’s health status and the need to monitor conditions as population grows He urged parents to have children checked by their family physician The talk included a first aid demonstration by a State Police member.
Mrs. F. Arthur Berry hosted South End P T A members at a Thursday tea as part of summer activities. Assistants included Mrs. Steven Bracey and Mrs. Harry T. Donnell. Mr. and Mrs. Howard V. Castle of Georgetown Conn returned home after visiting Mrs. Williams Crowley and Mr. Crowley at 52 Union Street.
Willis Kimball was thrown from his mowing machine when horses were startled by a car collision. He was taken to C. M. G. hospital in Lewiston for treatment.

Ten members of Troop 55 Boy Scouts returned Wednesday from a three day trip led by scoutmaster Rev. Joseph O Purdue and Carl E Albee. They traveled in two cars visiting Varney's camp in Northern New Hampshire and the Charterville immigration station before overnighting at Dolly Copp Camps in Gorham. Members included Curtis Albee David Crockett Robert Lawrence Richard Marr Colin Mitchell William Osborn Donald Spear Daniel Sylvester Bartlett and Joseph Swanton.
Mr. and Mrs. Edward D. Dall, married July 19, reside at Witch Spring after a Rockland wedding trip. Rev. George B. Wolstenholme officiated at the parsonage. Mrs. Dall is Virginia Mae Caton, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Pratt of 167 Middle Street. both families have Brunswick school ties.
Mr. and Mrs. William Henderson and their son Billy of Wollaston Massachusetts are occupying the Eugene R Brown homestead in West Bath. Mrs Henderson is formerly Miss Ruth Brown of this city and a granddaughter of Mrs Eugene R Brown of Deering Street.
