Donald M. Nelson announces a government move to simplify hundreds of non-defense products to curb scarce materials. The effort cuts varieties from wheelbarrows to shotgun shells with sharp reductions in sizes and types over 15 years, easing civilian cooperation for defense.
State engineers advance the Carlton bridge viaduct approach with Center street hill already a motorists headache. An elevated roadway would cross over Middle Franklin and Washington streets and Maine Central tracks, with an underpass at High street and a ramp to serve east west traffic, reducing danger near Center street school.
Summer visitors question why the state neglects improving the seven mile Popham Beach approach. The coast beach is praised as finest north of Old Orchard and would attract thousands. current rough stretches hinder daily outings. Some funds have been spent, and continued work could yield a reasonably good road over years.
The monthly report of Chief Henry B. Weaver shows 95 highway casualties in Maine through August 1, up 20.3 percent from the previous year. July added 19 fatalities, a 36.9 percent rise, including three young bicyclists, prompting a demand for stricter speeding and traffic law enforcement.
The motor car owner faces a new levy of five dollars per year under the bill that passed the House yesterday. Taxation on motorists has been high for years, and this adds another annual charge for car ownership.
Mrs John H Hunt hosted Free Will Workers of Corliss Street church. Mrs Harold Walker chaired with refreshments by Mrs Robert Mitchell and others. The group voted to cancel August meetings, set Sept 3 as the next session, and planned a December 3 Christmas sale. Guests included Mrs Vernon Mitchell of Port Arthur Texas and Miss Mary L Pinkham of Five Islands.
Demonstrations by Maine crafts people to showcase rugmaking metalcraft weaving and Angora rabbit wool spinning during the Skowhegan Fair August 10 to 16. Four Maine Craft Guild members will demonstrate afternoons and evenings with hours to be announced.
Guests and regional visitors enjoyed a three act water pageant at Newagen Inn based on a story by Emile F. Faubert. Prin cess Elaine and her acqua court swam and dove in formation with divers and champions including Edward J. Smyke and Bud Wheatley in a finale celebrating Coro nation March.
Miss Marcia Moulton chairs a supper dance at the Country club on August 9 following the success of the July 12 party. A committee met at her Middle Street home to finalize ten tative plans with members Mrs. Milton C. Trott Mrs. Robert P Shaw Mrs. Francis A. Winchen bach Mrs. Lorraine Price Mrs Richard T. Hersom Miss Mary Sew all and Mrs. J. Merritt Watson.
A Portland dispatch reports G. Vincent Pach, treasurer of the Todd-Bath Iron Shipbuilding and South Portland Shipbuilding firms, will become treasurer of Bath Iron Works Corp. pending a directors meeting. He will replace L. Eugene Thebeau who resigned after serving since the plant opened in December 1927. Pach, former treasurer of the New York World Fair Corp., now resides in Cape Elizabeth.
Tax Collector Donald D. Young reports that as of July 31 the two percent discount on taxes has brought in $314,549.32 at his office. This year’s total is noted as substantially higher than last year’s and higher than in the same period of prior years.
Mrs. Edward E. Carter of Washington D C arrived Wednesday for a visit with her mother Mrs. George W. Johnson of Washington street. Mrs. Carter will stay through August and part of September.
In Bath on Saturday morning Joseph Fortin of 13 Middle Street pled guilty to reckless driving and was fined 25 plus 4.50 costs or 30 days in jail. He had been involved in a Friday night collision on Route One near Witch Spring area. Mrs Fortin was treated for bruises. State Police investigated. Sherman Knowlton pleaded guilty to running a yellow light at Washington and Center and paid 4.70 costs. Francis Curran of Medford Mass pled guilty to passing a stop sign at High and Center. case placed on file after he explained sightseeing and unfamiliarity with Bath.
Sgt. Foster King addressed Maine State Guard Company D at the Armory. He warned of gas poisoning and other dangers while Capt. Alkazin urged enrollment to keep the Bath unit active through winter as it trails other towns in meeting quota. New uniforms and rifles were issued and drilling improved among enrolled men.
Frances Wallace a Bates College graduate from Bath won a decorating contest sponsored by Mademoiselle magazine. The August issue features a photo of her college room co designed with Miss Jean Atwater. Wallace, Morse High School valedictorian and Bates Carnival queen, hails from Maine and works seasonally at Ogunquit's Barbara Dean tea room.
Almont D. Bu teau wed Miss Maude F. May last Wednesday with Ralph O. Dale performing. Mr. and Mrs. Otto W. May of Boston are the bride’s relatives, and the groom is son of Mr. and Mrs. Alphonse Buteau of Skowhegan. He serves as steward at the Elks home.
Mrs E M Fuller Jr of Andrews road is visiting relatives in Hartford Connecticut for a week.
Stanley M. Lewis of Five Islands pleaded guilty to reckless driving after a Georgetown accident. Judge Gardiner R. Deering fined him 10 dollars plus 5.50 in court costs and placed him on six months probation. Patrolman John P. Crosby led the case from a side street collision causing minor injuries. In a separate case, Evan Hartman of Bedford Road pleaded guilty to not stopping at a stop sign at Union and Middle streets, paying 3 dollar fine and 4.70 in costs.
Stanley O Dickey of Rockland was driving a truck along route one through Bowdoin Pines toward Brunswick when a bee climbed his leg. He swatted it, but the bee persisted and the truck veered, snapping a telephone pole and telegraph wires and damaging the front end of the vehicle. Dickey and the bee are both reported to be doing nicely.
Sagadahoc Registry of Deeds records show numerous transfers with more than half for Bath properties. Transactions include land and buildings on streets such as Park North Bedford Front High Washington Meadow Way South Street and more involving buyers and sellers like Home Builders Inc and individual owners across Arrowsic Bowdoinham Phippsburg Topsham Woolwich and Bath proper.
Ex Representatives Joseph W. Larrabee and Dominique J. Tardif plan the fourth annual reunion at Rock Hill Inn West Bath on August 10. Larrabee served in the sixth session, Tardif in the 89th. A clambake opens at one with an afternoon sports program and invites extend to state officials.
The report notes this July was dry and hot with a protracted drought, low wells and streams, and gardens dried. It records 29 fair days vs 17 last year, one rainy day, one cloudy day, and five light shower days, with temperatures rarely dropping below 60 and highs around 68.
A 1939 Buick driven by E Curtis Plant and a 1939 Oldsmobile operated by Mrs Wooster collided at Union and Middle streets. Both vehicles suffered severe damage. occupants had minor injuries with bruises to a Wooster driver and a Voorhees passenger. Officers noted Wooster swung south on Middle to avoid impact.
An alarm from box 47 reported a fire at the old Boston boat wharf on Front Street between Ferry and Commerce. Engine 4 arrived, booster pump used, then a hydrant line. flames spread through decaying timbers but were controlled with no material damage and the all out sounded at 1 10.
The Food Stamp Plan began in 11 additional Maine counties, bringing the total to 12. Niles S. Baldridge, State Supervisor for the Surplus Marketing Administration, announced the rollout with Penobscot, Washington, Hancock, Waldo, Knox, Kennebec, Oxford, Franklin, Somerset, Piscataquis and Androscoggin going live Friday. York, Cumberland, Lincoln and Sagadahoc will start on Aug 15 after final arrangements.
Fred Flint about 65 of Cumberland Center sustained bruises and a sprained ankle after a car driven by Albert Skillings gray veered into a ditch to avoid horses and struck Flint as he walked behind a team on long reins on the State highway in Cumberland Friday night. Police reported Skillings avoided the crash to miss the horses.
Record filed with City Clerk Gilmore notes the birth of a son to Mr. and Mrs. Paul LeClair Jr. at Memorial Hospital on July 23, listing their address at 24 Hinckley Street.
Mrs. Julia Lattimer of Mamaroneck New York will speak Friday August 8 at the Boothbay Harbor Congregational church. The all day event runs 10:30 to 12 lunch, 2 to 4 with a question period. Tickets via Mrs. Herbert Harris Cosmopolitan club 300. Tea after at Mrs. Benjamin Rand Oak street. Rand chairs Boothbay Region Garden clubs.
Mary C Simpson 73 Deer ing street Portland pleaded guilty to speeding in Topsham. Judge Gardiner R Deering imposed a $3 fine and $4.75 costs after state highway patrolman Herbert Mariner testified she drove 50 mph in a 25 mph zone on Main street Topsham.
William Zorach a Robinhood sculptor serves on the jury for the seventeenth annual National Soap Sculpture competition. Pocter & Gamble awards total over $2,200. Edward Anthony of Detroit wins the major prize for Flight from Foreign.
The Pots and Pans Pickup campaign closed Thursday afternoon as City Messenger C. Leroy Hutchins and Boy Scouts canvassed the South end and areas west of Middle street. Five feet high piles of aluminum filled City hall foyer, with donations ranging from hair curlers to car radiators. Hutchins will still collect material if notified, and residents are urged to continue depositing metal at City hall. Mayor Walter C Rogers and Hutchins praised the drive’s strong response.
The Maine Florida association plans its annual reunion and clam bake on August 14 at Rock Hill Inn West Bath. Speakers include Ever et F Greaton Maine Development Commission executive secretary and Joseph Frohock named Ambassador of Sunshine by the Florida Governor. Oscar S Maxwell invites winter visitors from Florida to join the 400 members, with lake seaplanes featured.
Rev. and Mrs. Edwin D. Hardin of Massena New York arrived July 29 to spend August and early September at Sebasco. The couple, formerly of Bath, are occupying the Walker cottage while he serves as pastor at the Winter Street church.
