Farm Real Estate Tax Bill Lightest In Years
The 1935 farm real estate tax bill totaled 365 million dollars, the smallest in 16 years, compared with a 1929 peak of 567 million. Tax per acre rose from 10 cents in 1890 to 59 cents in 1929, then fell sharply during the depression as farm incomes and local government budgets adjusted downward. Dr. Eric Englund notes reductions reflect lower rural services and school budget cuts across regions.
